Just wondering how you guys rate your statements? I see some list 8/10, etc... I don't like writing about myself and while those who read my statements said they were great, I don't know how I would personally rate them.

I applied to UCLA, UCB, UCI, UCD as a poli sci major. My cumulative GPA at CC is 3.2, still hoping to bring it up in the spring.

I know UCLA and UCB are reach schools... Berkeley is my dream. Wondering about UCI and UCD as well, would they be considered reach as well?

I went to CC right out of high school but due to an abusive spouse I was "not permitted" to go to classes at times and performed poorly.

After a five year break from school to work full time, and finally ending the relationship, I returned and have dramatically increased my grades. If you guys have any advice, input, etc or would care to read my statements and rate them privately, it would be greatly appreciated!

My personal statement was whatever. I’d give it a 5/10 or a 6/10 at the most.

You said that you are a single mother of three kids in another thread. I think that UC Berkeley would love to have someone like you attend their campus. You’re not really a traditional student and you even said yourself that other people who read your personal statement love it. Berkeley cares more about life circumstances, personal statements, and ECs than any other UC. Considering your other life circumstances(Abusive relationship that hampered your academic performance, etc.) and the fact that you’ve persevered over them, I’d say that UC Berkeley would love to have you.

I second what Cayton said. The fact that you persevered from an abusive relationship and your going to school will make you standout as an applicant. I’m sure Berkeley would love to add you to their community.

I have no idea how the schools weigh everything or how the whole process works, but I also think you deserve to go to any of these schools. I hope they all recognize this. Good luck.

My first personal statement was okay, but my thesis statement came in the second paragraph (oops). My second personal statement was okay, but it was borderline sentimental, and at times boring (oops). Although I got As in both my English classes, my writing skills are still inconsistent and unreliable. I need some basic skills classes in writing.

The above is a typical criticism I would give myself, although I wouldn’t quantify my ability.
