Recently I’ve been hearing a lot about vision boards and actually vision board parties. I’ve been more familiar with this concept in workplaces and with room design …but not so much …life!
Had you made a personal VB? Attended a party? I guess a new year is the ideal time to make one - sort of like a yearly plan/hopes/dreams in pictures.
True story - I’ve been making “vision boards” since the early 80s, but my bff & I called them “roadmaps”
Every item I’ve ever mapped has come to fruition - maybe not quickly, but every one.
Examples…
1979: road map (collage & sketches) shows me roller skating “to work” at the Venice (California) Sidewalk Cafe (at the time I lived 8 miles away and was bussing tables in a steakhouse)…by early 1980 a friend asked me to rent a room on the Venice Oceanfront Walk, and I bought my first pair of skates…and scored a job waitressing at…the Sidewalk Cafe…and I would skate the 6 blocks to work for 2+ years!
1982: roadmap (all words, no pictures) described my ideal mate…that exact person came into my life in 1997…and when we got married he read the “roadmap” as part of his vows, to emphasize the power of visualization and patience.
2005: roadmap (collage) was a “self portrait” I call “6 Heads on 6 Feet” - 6 of my head silhouettes were tacked onto 6 feet of wood…each was a facet of my life: travel; family & friends; current things going on (I was back in school getting a degree in organizational leadership); things that I love to participate in; things I’ve done that make me proud; and finally future aspirations (I have written several short film scripts and a sitcom, and I wanted to pursue that area of my life)…2006 I found myself in film school for my elective credits, and within a year was producing and co-directing short films, one which won a Peace in Hollywood award and traveled the world on the film festival circuit (no, I never finished the degree program).
2006: roadmap (words no pictures) scribbled quickly as my D was heading to college she asked “do you think you’ll ever go back to a real job?” My response was it would take these 6 things…the very next day I was called by a headhunter I’d used 9 years before - 100% of the things I’d scribbled…and a few more that simply sweetened the pot!
Oh yes, I’m a fan!
Here’s my self portrait - it hangs in my office over my desk - as a reminder of the power of visualization and patience.
Every one of them. Most are in the attic waiting to get tossed after I pass (though I secretly hope they don’t!).
I forgot there was one I made in 1987 - collage and drawing of me playing Wheel of Fortune - you guessed it…1996, I was on Best Friends Week. Won enough $ to buy my very first new car.
Descriptive words and sometimes item links to pinterest or a website. It’s weird I see in pictures in my head, but physically/“on paper” I prefer numbers.
For those of you who do vision boards (like @JustaMom…who may have just convinced me to try to do one this year), where do you keep it during the vision board’s year?
Also, the Oprah link mentions focusing on one or two areas…while Justamom’s six foot roadmap has six different areas. For those who do the vision boards/roadmaps, how many do areas do you usually focus on for one year’s board?
I haven’t done one but I have seen people post theirs at home on a bulletin board, on the refrigerator, or in a closet where you might see it daily - a subtle reminder
When I’m done I usually hang it on my office wall or the closet door in my office. Someplace I can easily see it.
Some are larger sized and some literally copy paper size. Some are very outlandishly designed (“six heads on six feet” started out as a self portrait - but by its nature became a vision board) and some very simple.
You do you. Don’t try to copy someone else’s idea of what it “should” look like.
Most of all have fun with it. Think of all the fun things you can “ask” the “universe” to manifest for your good.
@abasket I was just on FB and one of my favorite things there (next to my family) are the memories…I’d forgotten about this and today it showed up (“dad” is my fil, and yesterday was one year since his death) - I’ll share what I wrote and 2 photos…
One of Dad’s bucket list items was to see the northern lights. They had evaded him & mom at least once as they traveled to Iceland for the experience - so in October (2021) when I heard that he and X were heading to Alaska to try (again!) to catch the aurora I went to work, and painted this as a way of manifesting the aurora for him. I’m a huge believer of “vision boards” and have been making them since the late 70s…before they were called that. Anyway, I texted him letting him know I’d put my intentions to the universe for him to have his dream of seeing the aurora. Lo and behold a few days later photos started pouring in from Alaska! The aurora showed itself magnificently! Later I talked to him about it and he said there really wasn’t much chance of seeing the lights the night (wee-morning) they went out as it was quite foggy and the tour guide wasn’t too hopeful. All I could do was smile.
I have a similar (thought not as dramatic) experience as JustaMom - did a vision board when I was finishing up my last (grinding) year in graduate school - clipped magazine pictures of all the things I wanted in the next stage, no matter how frivolous (red car, walking hand-in-hand with a guy beside a castle, young girl in blue dress with long hair).
Pulled it out about 10 years later - every one of those things had come to pass (wedding reception in castle-like place, red car, daughter who looked almost exactly like the long-ago magazine clipping). I had not looked at that collage for years - and, arguably, could not control many of the things that manifested - but here it all was!
My daughter and I (she’s now an adult) have done vision boards together every January for a few years. We also get a lot of our images online vs. magazines. Two of my friends teach vision board classes! Lately I want less stuff and more inner peace. lol
I did make an electronic vision board this year. I have it as the background on my cell phone and home computer. Come to think of it, I should probably make it the background on my work computer, too…
