I'm curious to know if admissions will look closely at my personal statements as a deciding factor if I'm applying into an open major (women's studies)? I have a high gpa, 3.9 and will have my IGETC complete by the spring. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this, Ktwish101! My question is similar to yours.

My major is Japanese language, I have a 4.0, and I’ll be done with IGETC in the Spring. I also have volunteering experience.

ktwish… I think that your personal statement will be a big factor for UCB. They admit by divison and social science division is MUCHO competitive (18% acceptance). The admissions people look at the entire package of an applicant for UCB. I am making sure that my essays sparkle. I wouldnt want some thing as small as my essay to prevent me from getting in when I have worked so hard to get this far.

That’s a good point, Rwasko.

Is Berkeley the only school that admits that way? I’m leaning more towards UCLA so I’m hoping I’ll have better chances there…

I think so. I don’t remember hearing anything about UCLA admitting by division.

they’ll read your personal statement and it will be as important as impacted majors. If it was less important, would you make it anything less than your best effort?

ucla admits by major.

Just write your a$$ off on the essay…then at least you can say you tried your best if you dont get admitted.

Thats my motto.
