A forum search tells me that finding an apartment in Berkeley that allows pets is hard and the past two apartments I've lived in here have unsurprisingly had no pet policies.

It would be really helpful if people could confirm apartments that DO welcome pets because I'm still heartbroken from having returned from the Berkeley Animal Shelter empty-handed. :(

Thanks. :)

Berkeley Animal Shelter has really lame adoption policies.

That said… good luck finding one in Berkeley with a vacancy that isn’t ridiculously expensive. I know of one, and it’s in North Berkeley (and it’s privately owned/operated). If you don’t mind a commute, the surrounding areas are MUCH more pet friendly. My new building – 4 blocks from a BART station, 2 from the Amtrak, and with a stop on the 72 line right outside – is pet friendly. Oakland.

I think if you take a look at the apartment listings on Craigslist for Berkeley, you will see that most, if not some, apartments do allow pets…namely cats.

I like cats, but prefer dogs more…but I understand why dogs are typically not allowed lol!

@undecided: Lame as in they require a copy of your rental lease to adopt a pet?

I think I remember coming across another shelter in Oakland that only required that of dog owners.

I actually just moved from being a mile from campus to being three blocks from campus since I prefer walking to other modes of transportation. But I’ll keep that in mind for the future.

@mars2008: Yeah, I do remember seeing lots of “cats are OK - purrr” listings on craigslist but since then, I’ve come to find apartments through _____ Properties websites and word of mouth because I didn’t like frantically chasing apartments, lol.

I always considered myself a dog person and was slightly afraid of cats but I’ve had a change of heart. :)

No, lame in that I visited them in the last 30 minutes of the day, found a dog I LOVED, asked if maybe they could put a hold on her and we’d be back first thing in the morning the next day with the lease, was told no hold but it was unlikely they’d adopt it out by the end of the day, and found out only after I’d made the trip back the next morning that the dog was adopted in the last 5 minutes.

That kind of lame. :P

Good luck! I know of several people keeping cats without permission. Honestly, they’re not that hard to hide…
