Petition to appeal dismissal from degree program

Can I petition to appeal academic dismissal over a dismissal from a degree program? I’m working on a petition after getting no advise from advisors and the associate dean. I’m wondering if such petition can work for a student who has been discontinued from a degree program. I’m in a process to submit the petition at the school UCR.

What is the basis of your appeal?

Why were you dismissed from the program? What went wrong?

Without more information it is hard to say anything useful.

The petition is generally used to accept students back to the University after a time of being dismissed from the school. For me, I’m trying a way to get back into the psych program as an undergrad over circumstances that had tainted my academic progress when it occurred. I was dismissed from the program because I was late to finish a list of lower-div prerequisite courses within the deadline, which I had only one. I took that one course and didn’t pass, and then tried to re-enroll but the course was overpacked and couldn’t do anything else but find another school to makeup for that class. Apparently, my deadline was Winter 2019 and since I failed to re-enroll, that was it for me because no one else dropped out of that one specific course. So overall, I was dismissed I failed to complete lower-div psychology requirements in time. What went wrong was mainly derived from family issues, another part involves me using social media, internet, and sleeping late so often. I also have had learning difficulties since childhood without being aware of what it really means, not even my family knew either. I only became aware of it until I had my first therapy. No advisor can tell me how to get back except tell me under the department’s discontinuation policy I’m pretty much forbidden to get back in.

If your advisor has told you that you are forbidden to get back in, why do you think people here are going to be able to tell you differently? Your advisor knows the rules better than anyone here.

Haven’t you asked this question before on another thread?

@me29034. OP has 4 discussions posted on this topic and has been told to move on since UCR’s policy does not allow readmission to the Psych major.

@yuiojo: If Psychology is your passion, then find another school to complete your degree and get on with your life. Based on your other posts, you have not attended UCR for a year so move on since it seems useless to pursue this readmission petition. Sorry to be so blunt but UCR has told you that it is not possible.

My advisor can’t tell me because she knows the department is strict, and former advisor keeps not telling me how no matter how I ask. All I get from my former advisor is the thing with her department’s discontinuation policy.

It sounds like there is no appeal process for getting into the major. It is too bad that you couldn’t get into the full course but it sounds like you didn’t have a good sense at the time that your slow pace through the requirements would have consequences even though you were a transfer student and needed to start making progress toward a major.

But here is the office that can help you: Office of the Ombuds | Help@UCR

Can a student affairs general petition do anything for me?

You need to contact UCR student affairs. I am sure no one here can give you the answer you are looking for since no one here works at UCR. It is up to UCR to determine.

The ombudsperson can tell you what to do next. They might have experience with this issue. Looking at the list of complaints they work with, they will probably just point you in the right direction rather than take on your complaint directly.
