Petroleum Engineering - Texas Tech

Is Texas Tech a good school for undergrad Petroleum Engineering? My sights are set on Texas A&M or University of Texas. However, I need a solid backup. I want a competitive program that has a strong alumni network, has a very high placement rate, and can get me a job with a major (I want to work internationally, offshore, etc, not just west texas, not there is anything wrong with west texas)

What would be a good backup considering that Im a Texas Resident and on a tight budget? (Probably can't afford CSM)

Thanks!

I think TTEch is a great backup.

If you can possibly get accepted to UT, A&M or even UH, there is no reason at all to attend TTech. When I interned for a major, we had a number of UH students (quite a good number, actually); however, we had no TTech students. The only TTech grads that I ran into were 07,08 hires (oil boom)… UH has very pronounced commuter components (And I don’t know about the quality of their program). Nonetheless, their location in Houston appears to give their grads a substantial edge with the majors/other Houston employers.

And don’t forget the schools across the border…LSU and UL-Lafayette. Both very strong PE programs and not too much higher than TX schools.

LSU, University of Oklahoma, CSM, and Texas Tech are all on my back up list. Texas Tech is my #1 backup only because of cost. The other school will be more expensive due to out of state tuition unless I can secure a scholarship.

To be honest, I’ve already written off UL Lafayette. Do they really have a competitive program? Do the majors recruit there? I’ve been writing to all of the PE programs in the US asking these types of questions and very few of them reply. Actually the most helpful are the programs I’m not looking at (U. Wyoming, West Virginia, Penn State, and Marietta)

Clastics,

UH is another program I haven’t looked into. The reasons are: it’s a new program and its not ABET accredited. However, I will take a closer look at their program now.

Do you think I have a chance of getting into UT Austin or Texas A&M?
I have a B.S. in Management / Finance, 3.9 GPA, and I’m currently attending a community college in Texas working on prereqs:
Calc I A
Calc II A
Chem I A
Chem II A
Calc III in progress
Physics I in progress

redsieria,

GPA at your CC? EC’s? SAT? These are more important metrics than your grades in engineering pre-req courses. Also, have you looked to see if ABET accreditation is important in petroleum engineering?

gstein,

What’s an EC?

The gpa is from my B.S. degree which is from a top 40 undergrad business program (according to Business Week).

SATs aren’t relevant.

Honestly, I don’t know a whole lot about accreditation and how important it is for this degree.

redsieria,

EC = Extra Curricular (activity, club, jobs, etc.). I was asking about your GPA at the community college you currently attend, not from your previous degree. And I’d argue that SATs are relevant for you since you’re applying as a transfer applicant.
