Hi, am new on this site i need some insights from current students majoring in petroleum engineering and also from students that already graduated. Am interested in Petroleum Engineering. Am currently attending a community college and am ready to transfer. I applied to University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Houston, University of Wyoming, Montana Tech of The University of Montana, Texas Tech University. I also filled out an application to LSU but I never turned it in. I got accepted into University of Alaska Fairbanks as a Petroleum Engineering student and my other application to other schools are still pending.

The problem is that I dont know which one of these schools to go to. I heard some negative things about University of Houston so am kind of loosing interest already. Please help me

How hard is the major I dont know what am getting myself into because am just an average student. Right now am taking calculus III, Chem II and Computer science C++. Am I gonna be ok if I transfer. How hard are the curriculums? How should I study? What to do to make it through.

I had a few friends who went to UH. UH has a good program, especially due to it’s across the street proximity to downtown Houston but it really doesn’t have a strong campus life. The vast majority of students at UH are commuters or working professionals and thus they are only there to go to class and then go home.

Sure in the morning/afternoon there will be a ton of people on campus but come 7-8 PM the campus will be desolate. I’m not sure about the other schools but TTech is supposed to have a good campus life.

As far as the curriculum goes, I found that Petroleum Engineering might be easier than ChemE/MechanicalE but is still a rigorous degree. Right now it seems like you are on track but make sure you take Physics 1/2 (w/labs).

UAF is a good petroleum engineering school. Here are some pros and cons:

The top UAF departments (geophysics, petroleum engineering, etc) often engage in some very cool projects here in Alaska

The UAF petro department is very reputable (at least in the AK oil industry)

UAF is not a well-rounded school; outside of the top few programs, quality declines RAPIDLY

Fairbanks is a tough place to live

Is it too late to apply to Colorado School of Mines? Admissions are competitive, but the petroleum engineering program is outstanding.

Hi you said that fairbanks is a tough place to live. what do you mean by that. and also do you think if I get my degree from there, do u think it would be good enough to work other place like texas. Becaus am not a alaska resident and i dont want to live there for the rest of my life. Am from Illinois

Thanks to everyone that Post on this thread. But I have a question. You said your friends went to UH how long ago if u dont mind me asking. And how is getting my degree from there? because i read that when companies see that you got your degree from UH, they take you as a joke. Because the school is a joke and i also read that the campus is not safe and also alot of racism there. i also read that people that got their degree from there work at mcdonald. Is that true.

Fairbanks is bitterly cold and it does not offer a lot as a city. From what I understand, UAF has a decent reputation in oil/geological areas but not many other places. It probably won’t wow anyone, but your other choices aren’t much better. Houston is probably a peer petro-wise, but a very different social fit.

hey i have applied to UAF and UH for the petroleum program i am an international student i would like to know a little about the social life in fairbanks and houston

Hi,
Hi,
My profile:
GRE-M740/Q550
GPA-4.36/5.0(top 1 in class)
1st Degree-Petroleum Engineering
Intl Student.
Please advice me on the safe schs i can apply to easily get admission for Fall 2011 and possible funding as I dont want to apply to top schs like Tulsa,TAMU,UT and co just to be rejected like OU just did (Spring 2011 App.)
Your advice is highly needed.

i intend making a chioce btw UH and TTU, what do u advice?

If you are an international student, then don’t go for petroleum engineering but go for mechanical engineering or chemical engineering. Just a suggestion.
