I am a student at a community college & hoping to transfer to university in Fall. I want to major in Petroleum engineering. As a female, will i be at disadvantage knowing that it is a male dominated field? Will i have to be working in an oil rig/drilling? please can someone tell me how the petroleum engineering field is like especially for the female. Thank you

I work in the industry and am female (though not engineering) and would encourage you to pursue this. You would be in a minority but not at a disadvantage. There will be many career opportunites in this field. Good luck!

Its a male dominated field yes,but you should ask this-do you want to make money? If yes then PetE is for you(assuming you like the subject).

As for traveling, there a desk jobs available. There is no stipulation that you have to travel always.OR if you must travel(no desk jobs),it will once a month or so(I think) but not like every week.Plus vacations are pretty good.

I answered on your other thread, but I would add - what’s wrong with drilling rigs? Have you ever been around one? Big machines are fun!

You’ll be fine. Conduct yourself appropriately, dress appropriately, remember we’re pretty conservative (heck, we’re engineers) but I know a lot of very successful women in the field, and more coming up all the time.

Also, thanks for considering the profession. We have a huge demographic problem, the average practicing Pet E in the US is over 50 years old. We NEED young people so us geezers can retire and go sailing and fishing.

15 years ago I mentored some young people who were on the fence about Pet E and Pet Geology, telling them that their main challenge would be choosing which company they wanted to run. I was pretty close, we stay in touch, they’re all very successful.
