I am looking to stay on the west coast and so far have only found 2 schools that offer Petroleum Geology, Western State College of Colorado and CSU Long Beach. Does anyone know any other Universities that off this?

It seems as though this is a field where a masters is generally preferred to a simple bachelor’s degree. Because of this, I believe it would be just as useful to major in something like mining engineering (which is offered at far more schools), and then move on into graduate school.

From what I understand from various sources is that most Petroleum Geologists fresh out of school with a BS are starting in the 85k a year range…

There are exceptions, but a MS is a generally required to really get into the petroleum field as a geologist.

You dont need --and I would generally not recommend – a petroleum geology program.

The californaia schoola by and large have very good geology programs.

I am a 26 year petroleum geologist (BS Texas Tech, MS Texa A&M) I have worked in California and knew people with geology degrees from various places here are some good ones f–form my experience-- in Calironia.

undergarduate, you dont have to be as picky

Salaries are about right but genrally for a MS 85000… industry is slumping a little right now, along with the whole country
