The best Geology Programs

I want study Petroleum Geology, this would include the normal Geology Bs and then a Ma in Petroleum Geology. My question is which schools in both the USA and Canada have the best undergraduate geology and graduate Petroleum Geology courses.

Thanks for the time

If there are any universities that offer a Bs in petroleum Geology its even better.

The place to start is by checking the geology programs at universities in oil-producing US states (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/List_of_oil-producing_states</a>). Here’s a list of US universities by state: https://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/state/</a> You also might focus on schools that also have petroleum engineering depts. ([Petroleum Engineering Schools/Programs in the United States of America](http://www.univsource.com/petroleum.htm)), though it doesn’t necessarily mean that a school that does not offer petroleum engineering will be weak in petroleum geology.
There are no reliable undergrad rankings for geology departments, but checking the grad rankings either in USNWR or the NCR rankings ([Earth Sciences Rankings — PhDs.org Graduate School Guide](http://graduate-school.phds.org/rankings/earth-sciences)) will give you an idea of the stronger depts.

I recommend the following 10 universities for Geology and Geochemistry:

California Institute of Technology
Columbia University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Pennsylvania State University-University Park
Stanford University
University of Arizona
University of California-Berkeley
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Texas-Austin
University of Wisconsin-Madison

Some of those schools are reaches for all, others are more reasonable.

CalTech does not offer a degree in petroleum studies, at either the UG or Grad. level. The do have the best overall UG Geology dept in the US, but not as much to offer a future Petroleum Geologist as say UT.
You should look into Colorado School or Mines.
And add USC to your list.

Your best bet is colorado school of mines, new mexico school of mines. Also just take a quick look to see if cal inst & georgia tech offer the petroleum option.

Cal State Long Beach offers Petroleum Geology for undergrads but I’ve never heard anything about the program there.
