Ph.D/MD program

Hey, I am an aspiring surgeon but more importantly I want to be in the science/medical field my whole life even after I retire. I obviously plan on going to medical school and then residency, etc. but does anyone know a lit about Ph.D/MD programs? Does it negatively affect my chances at becoming a surgeon? Is it worth doing? I was thinking like a Ph.D in biochemistry or something. I know they do the first 2 years of med school then the 3 or more years of graduate studies then the last 2 years of med school. That puts me at being able to practice orthopedic or some other surgery around 35. Sounds like a pain but to me, sounds very interesting and exciting. Any opinions?

Do you want to do research, more specifically basic science research, as a career? If you don’t, then there is no point in getting a PhD in addition to an MD.
