But the first two years of pre-pharmacy classes are very similar to pre-med prerequisites (and other pre-health options).
So she could still decide after 2-3 semesters if she wants to take the PCAT and apply to pharmacy schools, or not.
My D in pre-pharmacy has to take:
Gen Bio 1,2 with labs 8 cr
Gen Chem 1,2 with labs 8cr
O Chem 1,2 with lab 8cr
No Physics (but many Pharm D programs require at least one semester)
English Composition and Writing 6 cr
Calc 1 4 cr
Statistics 4 cr
plus 24 credits of electives in Humanities and Social Sciences (total 62 credits)
@NosyCaliparent I will support her med school dream for as long as she dreams it. She is a great kid with a whole bunch to offer this world quite honestly and she would probably be great in any medical profession. So, much to my dismay, I have laid off the attempts to persuade her into other career paths at this point. She is a junior and will be taking SAT/ACT within the next few months. Her college choices will most likely be determined by her test scores (sad to say) and she has quite an extensive list which includes a variation of public/private and very selective (reach)/within range spanning from Michigan to Florida back up to the Northeast along the coastline. Her favorite classes include sciences and math and so it seems medical field is for her! If anyone has a child interested in law however, let me know and I’m happy to provide some insight!! LOL Neither of my kids want anything to do with law school
@mommdc thank you! I have gone through some of the different programs and yes, so correct! At this point I’m assuming she will not apply to a 0-6 program and instead, will go the pre-med route and decide after the first year a field of specialization, etc. I have even thrown optometry out there for her to consider as a school she is interested in as a top choice has a great 3/4 program! It is a work in progress
@xaviermom2017 Her future looks very bright. There are also so great SoCal schools like UCLA and USC(good medical and pharmacy school) and great NoCal schools Berkeley and Stanford on which I have lots of info on or University of SF(#1 Pharmacy school).
We focused on merit for undergrad, because of grad school costs being high.
Thankfully my D was able to get full tuition to her first choice school, and it is good for 4 years, 2 years pre-pharmacy tuition and 2 years pharmacy tuition. So she most likely only has to borrow for the last 2 years.
@mommdc that is fabulous that she was able to get full tuition at her first choice!! Congrats to her! She must have been a great student with great stats!! I agree with the merit for undergrad given the costs of grad! @NosyCaliparent I am hoping she stays Northeast - selfish reasons lol!! However, she has mentioned a few out that way and I will be picking your brain if she follows through once she takes her SATs/ACT and sees where she stands!! Thank you
