ESPM 50AC looks like it requires prof's permission to get straight in? theres 180 spots, 150 are filled, and theres 57 people on the waitlist.

Would it be plausible if I got my discussion to be able to get into the class? Also, Anthro 2AC has a fair number of spots left, and doesn't seem as popular. Would this be a better AC option to phase 2?

Lastly, do most engineers get the E 10 they want? Because if I can't get the lab I want, my entire schedule is basically screwed since I have a chem lab too.

Thanks for the help.

You will get the the E10 Lab you want since you take a survey in the beginning of the course and select which lab time is available for you.
I wouldn’t be in a hurry to take the AC course. It seems like you’re limiting yourself to get either the ESPM 50AC or the Anthro 2AC, but there are at least 43 AC courses offered for this semester and some of them are just too interesting to let it pass. (if you’re worried about grades, there are even easier courses than ESPM 50AC) Just take this semester to find what topic really interests you (if Environmental studies or anthropology is indeed your interest, I won’t say more) and come back again for spring semester.

Ya, I’m basically looking for an easy class, but I’m easy to please. Don’t think I’ve ever taken a class I didn’t like, I’ve just had bad teachers. I’d be open to suggestions for interesting classes also. The reason I was looking for an easy class is that I have math, chem, and engineering going on also. Wanted to take an AC this first semester because I only have 11 units with my current classes and can’t sign up for my second english r&c requirement yet.

If there are leftover spots for an AC class, the priority always goes to seniors since they’re considered desperate. 57 people on a waitlist with 180 capacity is… essentially impossible to get in especially because it is ESPM 50AC. I am pretty sure you are in CoE (I have no idea which branch of engineering you’re in though lol) and how about you fill the 12 unit with a seminar?

I’m engineering - mechanical. Ya I was thinking about a seminar, 12 units just seemed “low”. I was going with the philosophy of clearing all my nondegree requirements out of the way and right away, but thats probably not the best way of doing things.

You’ll have time to catch up even if you start with 12 units first semester… Many people get out of R1A and skip Math 1A/1B so that’s 3 classes saved in your first 2 years already. I hope I am not insulting your intellectual capacity in any way, but it is always a safe idea to ‘go easy’ on your first semester in Cal. I know those who take 17~18 units of classes are going to look so cool, but some of my close CoE friends who actually got a home-run 4.0 gpa in their first semester just took Chem 1A, Math (either 1B or 53), E10, and a seminar - 12 units.

Ya that was my plan if I didnt get an english or AC first semester, but taking it easy sounds like a pretty good idea. I’ll come in with decent AP credit to give me some empty units for sophomore standing. Thanks for the advice!
