<p>Well, I think generally some of the disciplines only end in one or the other. As far as I know, performance degrees are DMA degrees and not PhDs, across the board, and I believe the same goes for conducting. Musicology and music theory tend to be (again, as far as I’ve seen) PhDs. I know that composition can be either degree, though I don’t know the exact distinction. The DMA implies more of the music-school approach rather than that of an academic-only music department (which would grant a PhD), but someone with more first hand knowledge could chime in.</p>
