Ok, obviously a PhD takes waay longer to complete than a Masters, fair enough, but in a Masters (Biomedical/Bioengineering) is there only lectures? Or is there actual laboratory work involved?

If so, is this individual laboratory work? Or is it governed by the PI of the lab, i.e. do what he/she tells you? And how much of the masters course would actually comprise of physical lab work?

It depends on your program. If you do a thesis then you will be doing a lab work under an advisor. If you apply for funding and are able to get a research assistantship then you will be carrying out work for your PI while doing your course work. If you don’t have a thesis requirement, I assume you will have a project course that is similar to doing a thesis but instead of writing a thesis statement you would publish a paper. In some of your graduate courses you will have projects which may require you to do some lab work.
