PhD's in Theatre

So I've been around a few forums, and the graduate part of this forum and I can hardly find anything about people applying to PhD's for theatre. I thought I'd try in here. Anyone out there applying, or already in a program?

I've just finished my applications to OSU, Northwestern, Tufts, The Graduate Center, Texas Tech, and UCLA. I'd love to compare schools, and be able to connect with other people once we begin to hear back.

I’m curious why you have decided to pursue a PhD in Theatre rather than an MFA.

I am in an MFA program currently actually. Writing for the Stage and Screen. I would like to round out my theatre education, focus a bit in arts admin along with my writing, and teach for university.

I really thought that a lot of Arts Administrators had MFAs without PhDs. Also, I thought a lot of theatre faculty in universities had MFAs without PhDs. An MFA is a “terminal degree” like a PhD.

If I am wrong, please explain, because it will really change my thoughts for the future if an MFA can’t do everything I thought it could!

KEVP

As a writer, I would be looking to teach outside of theatre as well. Many schools are beginning to look for PhD’s as well. I have my reasons for wanting both

I was really just wondering if anyone else out there was applying to open up a discussion about schools and acceptances.

I think it’s a great topic for discussion but I don’t think there will be much response here. Most people are posting to ask for undergrad.
