About textbooks, are we supposed to start ordering them now? Also, how do we know the books that we chose are the right ones? Apparently, there are no textbooks for Russian- it didn’t show up on the list. When I selected my math class and section, it said there were no books required for that course. For biology, the 2 books required already added up to $304.75! Does anyone know anything about this?
@acoolperson my DD is not going to Andover but we met the Russian instructor and he’s developed his own materials that you’ll use on an iPad so I believe there is no book. I work at a college and the price of science books is especially high – sometimes as much as $600 per book!
^^ Always worth it to check Amazon - my $150 +12 shipping pre cal textbook is available to rent for like 70
Just buy them used on Amazon. To be quite frank, Follet(the textbook company Andover uses), is an absolute rip off, especially for textbooks that will only be used for one year.
Just be careful about editions and match the ISBN very carefully. I love the Amazon rental program and did it for my high school son this summer when he took a college course. Their return dates are a bit odd and it was a rush to get it back in time. We use Follett where I work and I agree wholeheartedly…
I’m having trouble adding myself to the parent directory on The Hive; anyone else, or is it just me?
I was just curious, why do we have to take another math placement test on the first day for new student orientation since we had to take one back in like may/june and we already got our courses and textbooks?
The math placement tests in the fall are to make sure that you are placed in the correct math course.
You shouldn’t be worried if you did the earlier placement test on your own because the questions should be very similar to the ones on the spring test. They just want to make sure you aren’t in the wrong level.
If you are taking a qualifying exam for 280, 380, or 595, you might be placed into an accelerated class, which should use the same textbook that you have already.
Oh @WishStar12 – we didn’t realize that everyone has to take the math placement tests during orientation–we thought it was just for those that wanted to change their placement. We will be sure to have DC keep the textbook receipt!
Actually - it turns out I made a mistake - I just looked at the opening of school schedule and I believe the math department has asked a number of students to take a qualifying exam for accelerated classes. It doesn’t look like all students will be taking an exam.
I just got a little mixed up because everyone needed to take a test when I was at orientation.
So sorry - disregard my previous post.
Thanks @WishStar12 !
That will make AppleKid happy
Okay so quick question: what are we supposed to wear for the matriculation ceremony???
Another question: any kids/parents of kids that have been on Drumline? Maybe you could PM me?
@zblue20 - I’m pretty sure it’s formal, so a dress, suit, etc. should be okay.
2 DAYS!!! SO EXCITED.
DH and I have just said good-bye to AppleKid! The dean of students made me cry at chapel, and we had to make a run to bed bath and beyond bc the mattress cover we brought was 2" too short even though it was labeled twin XL. Roomy is international and upon meeting us the parents said how wonderful it must be for us that we are so close and only a 2-hour flight from school–that put our 12+ hour drive in perspective
