Phillips Exeter Academy Exeter NH

What are Exeter’s priorities in the application (grades, SSAT, interviews, etc.)?

This doesn’t exactly answer your question, but I’d say this list defines what Exeter is looking for very accurately. http://www.exeter.edu/documents/Student_Profile.pdf

Harkness question: do students raise their hands to speak at the Harkness table? I didn’t think so until a picture on Groton’s website made me think otherwise.

At Exeter there is no hand raising. I do not know about Groton.

Thank you!

Hi! I just got accepted at Exeter!! Could a current student or parent of a current student tell me a bit more about how the academic schedules work? And what courses are required for new lowers? I’m from the midwest, so I don’t know much about how boarding schools work.

@omgjusttellme, did you look at all those “what is my day like?” student profiles on the website? They really walk you through several students’ days hour by hour, giving a good picture of academic schedules.

@booklady123 Thanks! I didn’t realize how many of them they had.

@omgjtl WELCOME to another Midwesterner! We are from the Midwest too.

Figuring out a good academic schedule as a new lower involves checking the “3 year diploma requirements” section of the course catalogue, and reviewing the courses to see what you need, and might like. Basically, you can only take 5 academic courses each term (music and health can be added on top if needed). You can contact the Dean of students office with questions, and you also will be assigned a temporary advisor. Some things like math and foreign language may ask for placement exams. Once you pick your courses, the schedule gets created for you. Classes typically go from 8AM to 6PM including physical education/sport time, and a few free blocks and lunch.

Many new lowers will take English, a classic or modern language, math, biology or physics, and an elective (history, computer science, art or religion). PE or a sport is also required every term lower year.

@omgjusttellme, Welcome! I’m currently a prep (the year right before a lower) at PEA so maybe I’ll see you next year. 2prepMom covered most of what you’ll be choosing from for the coming year. Looking into what requirements you have for courses is probably your best bet at choosing them. I can offer, however, a word of advice. Think about how you set up your courses for each term. Specifically for the winter term. Most people choose something entertaining or something they enjoy to avoid winter blues. I wouldn’t worry too much about that though, the winter isn’t have as bad as people make it out to be. I come from the South, though so seeing the sun less isn’t much of an inconvenience for me personally.

Does anyone know when course selection begins?

@2prepmom and @SKubrick thanks! I am so excited for next year! :))

is it possible for one to do theatre and a sport at the same time?? I really like theatre, and ive done it for 2 years at my high school (i was accepted as an upper at PEA), but I’m thinking i might also throw in a sport, just to help college applications a smidge, give some oomph to my application.

Who’s going to be a new Exonian next year?!?!?!

:D me!!

Meeee ^___________________^
Im gonna be repeat prep though…

… any other Class of 2018 Exonians out there?? :D

I’ll be class of 2018!

Hopefully I’ll be in the class of 2019!

Ayeee me too '17

I’ll be coming in as in upper 2014-15! class of 2017 as well

Oh and I have a question as well. How long does it typically take to get acclimated to the boarding school climate. I’m really excited for exeter but equally nervous about living at a boarding school
