Phillips Exeter Questions

Hi! This is my first time applying to a prep school and had a couple questions for former/current students or parents who went to Exeter. I am going into 9th grade.

  1. How is the freedom of students? Can you go off campus alone?
  2. What is on campus store wise?
  3. What are the curfew times for each grade?
  4. How much is the interview weighted in the application process?
  5. If I do get waitlisted, what are my chances of getting a spot?
  6. Should I apply next year if I don't get in this year?

Thank you, and if there is a forum that answers these I’d love to see one!

  1. There is a lot of freedom. Kids can walk downtown and travel within the “Exeter vicinity” without needing an out of town
  2. There is a bookstore and because of its location in the town, you can walk to any of the downtown stores or a little further away to Walgreens.
  3. Prep-8, lower 9, upper and senior 10. Those are the school night times.
  4. Not sure
  5. Always slim

6.yes reapply if you still want to go.

Hey, prepschoolgirll!

  1. Yes, there's a ten mile radius that Exeter students get to explore around the campus (this radius includes Portsmouth, NH).
  2. There's Grill, which is a small convenient-store styled place that sells snacks, drinks, dorm necessities, etc. on campus and a bookstore as well. In the town of Exeter, there are multiple places to eat, including Mexican and Chinese restaurants within walking distance. The town is small, but has all necessary stores (coffee shops, ice cream shops, music store, walgreens, dunkin' donuts, etc.).
  3. Preps and lowers need to check in by 8, uppers have until 9, and seniors check in at 10.
  4. I'm not completely sure, but I'd say it weighs a fair amount. The admissions board looks for compatibility with the rest of the community when looking at applicants, but I feel like the interview is as much a way for you to get to know the school as it is for the admissions to get to know you.
  5. Pretty small, most people who get on the waitlist aren't accepted in the end. Especially for Exeter, many people choose to come here if they're accepted.
  6. Yes! If you aren't happy with the schools you got into and aren't going to a boarding school for 9th grade, many new lowers are accepted every year. It's easy to integrate into the Exeter community and applying a second year shows dedication.

Hope I answered some of your questions. You can message me if you have any more!
