I'm becoming really interested in learning about different philosophies and also with psychology. Any recommendations for good books on either of these subjects?

I’d start with Wikipedia, narrow down slightly more specific topics, and then look for “Intro to ____.”

One intro to Philosophy I’ve read is called “Sophie’s world,” however I’m not a huge fan. It’s got a lot of text, but not a lot of meat. Too much narration. (Given, it claims to be narrative, and it is…) But it’s very easy to read if you’re looking for something casual.

If you do find one good [moderately dense] overview to all topics, let me know.

I’ve taken 0 Psychology, and unless I decide I need a GPA booster I probably won’t ever take a Psych class, so I can’t really say much there.

Bertrand Russell’s History of Western Philosophy. Probably the best broad overview of Western philosophy out there. Other than that, you’d probably have to read the specific texts by certain philosophers (and probably corresponding commentary too).

^^ So call me dumb, but I didn’t realize exactly how many branches of philosophy there were. I skimmed through the overview on Wiki, and looks like there’s a few I’m definitely going to explore more deeply (Existentialism is one that popped out at me.)

^ Now just have to decide whether I want to save $10 and buy an “acceptable” copy, or buy a new copy from Amazon :P

Thanks to both of you!

Bumping for more suggestions while people are on xP

Fear and trembling by soren kierkegaard
Thus spoke zathustra by nietzche

Read the Complete Works of Aristotle. IMO he’s the best of the big three ancient Greek philosophers.

I think I’ll have to get a little more under my belt before hitting up Aristotle :P

The Story of Philosophy by ____ Magee is what we read in my Theory of Knowledge class. It’s not terribly long, but is detailed enough, and gives an amazing overview of philosophy from the beginning of time to modern ages. I mean, this was required reading at school but I still loved it. Plenty of pictures for the distractable, with important quotes put in large font.
