Hi I’m going to be graduating high school this year and going to college in the fall. I want to take pre-med courses in order to go to medical school, but I also want to take philosophy as a major. At first I always thought I had to take bio as a major if I wanted to go to med school but since that isn’t the case I just wanted some clarity on what it’s like being a philosophy major and how it’ll help me in the future. I’ve always been interested in philosophy and I feel like I will really like it. I also wanted to know if majoring in phil. versus bio would mean that I’m a little behind once I get to medical school.
Thanks!
You can take the pre-med courses alongside any major, including philosophy. About half of applicants and matriculants to medical school had something other than biology as their primary undergraduate majors.

Philosophy is a very good pre-professional major.

As a broad generalization, philosophy majors excel analytically. It’s hard to beat this group when it comes to speaking, writing and thinking clearly and precisely. Excellent training for many fields.
You will have an entire lifetime to hone your skills in your chosen profession. Use your four undergrad years to get a broad education. You won’t regret it.
