Philosophy Major - Boston Area

I am looking at a few schools in the Boston area that have strong Philosophy programs, which include:
Tufts, Boston University, and Umass Boston

(ranked in order of current preference)

Can anyone give me some insight on the Philosophy programs in these schools, and maybe point me toward one of the three?

Thanks,
Gerbert

I don't have any personal experience with the three, but Tufts' program looks very good. They even have Daniel Dennent, one of the world's most famous living philosophers!

Rutgers? Ranked second in the world for grab, top 10 for undergrad.

I have read great things about Rutgers, but it is too far away from Boston.

White_Rabbit: You are right. He is well respected. Even though we have opposing world views, I would love to study under him.

It is looking like Tufts would be the best out of those three. But I do not know too much about BU and Umass Boston. Do they have a strong undergraduate program?

Boston College. The Jesuits are world renowned in Philosophy.

Have you looked at The Philosophical Gourmet web site? It gives advice on picking an undergraduate department.

southernbbq: I didn't realize that about the Jesuits. I will have to look into BC.

Consolation: Yes I do check Phil Gourmet pretty regularly. It is is great resource.

I have read that BU is very large, and the student/faculty ratio is very high. So that is a downside for them. Tufts is very appealing because of its small size compared to the other three schools.

Are these assumptions correct? I plan to visit Boston early March to check out the campuses.

Thanks for the help.

My best friend majored in philosophy at BU, had a wonderful education, got to know his professors quite well, was one of two Class speakers at graduation, and ended up at Penn Law. He had as good an undergraduate experience as my friends at St. Olaf and Davidson...don't let size throw you off.

wow, that is very encouraging. I guess it lies a lot on the student to work hard and get to know the professors. Thanks for the input.
