Hi there i’m trying to get into medical school, but i need to do my undergrad first. I was thinking doing philosophy for my undergrad. How hard is it to get into that major esp. in Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis, and UC Santa Cruz? Thoughts? Advise? Thanks
A humanities based major like Philosphy is a very good major as a prospective Pre-Med student. Fitting in your Medical School requirements will require you to be pretty flexible with your class schedule. I would look at each school’s course requirements for the major and how much overlap you have with your major classes and med school requirements. Also, what do you want to do with a Philosophy major if you happen not to get into Medical School? You should always have a backup plan.
Philosophy is not an impacted major at UCSC/UCD, although all majors at SLO are considered impacted, it still should be an easier admit if your stats are within range (at the averages or above).
SLO’s target acceptance rate for Philosophy is around 60% so not bad odds.
Here are the stats for last year’s Freshman at SLO (College of Liberal Arts).
Liberal Arts Applied: 7979 Admitted: 2557
Average: 3.94 Average ACT:29 Average SAT (Math+CR): 1290
