I realize all I ever share are sunset pics (boring), but this cloud tonight was too cool not to post.
Spent a fair bit of my time this morning watching a new litter of young squirrels exploring their world. I believe there were 4 youngsters and mama, but catching them all in one photo certainly wasn’t happening. At one point there were two looking at me from the top hole, but I wasn’t quick enough to get that cute one. I did get two using both holes though. There’s a third hole behind the tree that one can’t see, but it makes it fun when the squirrels are playing as they can suddenly appear out of “nowhere.”
Most will end up being hawk or other critter food, so I’m glad they’re getting to enjoy part of their short lives. It’s always fun to watch youngsters explore.
Around this time of the year, my yard becomes a very popular stop for these thirsty Lesser Goldfinches and House Finches. They were having so much fun at my solar water fountain…
We have similar views but with blue jays, robins, finches, and this morning a woodpecker!
Is anyone else seeing far more Monarch caterpillars this year than before? We get them from June to the end of fall, but right now literally every Milkweed plant has at least one caterpillar on it, often more. We save a lot of Milkweed patches just for the Monarchs.
I don’t know if our farm is now one of their top rated BnBs in their Monarch guidebook or if there’s a large number out there this year everywhere. I guess it could also be that fewer people are willing to leave Milkweed growing for them.
We have tons of Monarch butterflies this year. I credit that to the fact that so many people have reduced lawn sizes, switched to growing more natives (especially milkweed) and our local Healthy Yards and Pollinator Pathway efforts.
Doc went to his new home today. Fortunately he took the transition well and they love him there. They sent me the pic.
He’ll love all the attention. He’s reached the point where he needs a “job” to keep him amused - not all that different than toddlers growing into dependable, willing helpers. Young ponies grow so quickly. He’s 5 months old now. Unlike humans his mama and aunt were not phased with his leaving. His aunt seems to actually like not having to babysit the weanling any longer.
May you have a great life Doc!
I hope he becomes a cute pony hunter for a little kid one day!
Saw this guy in person the last week while brush hogging a trail in the woods. First bear I have seen on our farm. Finally captured him on camera last night!
Adorable—looks like hobbit house.
How cute. Where is this?
In Virginia. 30 min from Harrisonburg. The man built it himself. Every detail is wonderful. He’s building a second one twice as big.
I wanna go!
