We’re staying at the Stone Fence Inn outside of Ogdensburg. Never stayed here before because we stayed with my mom, but I’d stay here again. It’s old and needs some fixing up - Covid might have led to that problem financially. I’m not sure. But the room has comfy beds (firm beds), a microwave, fridge, and sink (not meaning the bathroom sink), so couple that with the view and location for our needs and it’s perfect. It’s off season now, so quite quiet, at least midweek. A great bonus in our book.
If one is looking to tour the Thousand Islands it’s a bit of distance away, so I’d recommend Clayton or Alex Bay.
This is a barge rather than a laker or ocean-going ship, but it shows the color of the river on a sunny day (pic taken from our deck at the motel). Seeing a barge is actually more unusual than seeing a ship on this river. The color comes from the water being far deeper than most rivers (approx 50-60’ where that barge is which is shallower than many areas of the river) and cleaner due to emptying the Great Lakes instead of just run off (aka less mud).
Today is a gorgeous day - our last in the area for quite some time, giving me a bit of nostalgic feelings TBH.
I posted a little too soon. This ship is named Eider and is on its way to Montreal. I thought we’d be gone before it got out in front, but it made it here. Now we’re going to wait for two more coming really soon, but I won’t hog the thread by posting pics of them. 'Tis definitely a gorgeous fall day here. The pics don’t capture it, but some of the trees in Canada are changing (US side too).
Gosh it’s fun to hear the name Ogdensburg. It is not too far from my college town of Potsdam. I tell people I went to Clarkson, waaaaaay upstate in NY.
Both of my parents went to SUNY Potsdam. A cousin went to Clarkson. I used to ride horses (as a teen, not a college student) at St Lawrence. My sister went to SUNY Canton. We definitely know the North Country colleges, at least in the past we did.
I defected and went to Virginia Tech. No regrets actually. Winter lasts a long time where I grew up.
Anyone want to guess where we’ve been today? Shouldn’t be a difficult guess. It was an absolutely gorgeous day - very relaxing and fun. People are definitely still traveling - heard a lot of different languages, some we could identify and others where we were making guesses. There were quite a few different state plates too.
Love how they have the deck built more into the water this year:
And my farming lad found a fun gem - Chicken of the Woods he tells me:
Normally we love “different” places, but “old reliables” are good too as long as nature is involved. (It was a first trip here ever for one of my DIL’s - she’s as in love with the falls as we are now. I knew she was a great fit for our family. )
That’s a valuable mushroom find! You can buy it by the piece at our farmer’s market. But it is not super common.
Oh aren’t your feet chilly?!
The water was definitely cold! But it didn’t take long to get used to it fortunately. We spend a lot of time at the Cave of the Winds, esp on the Hurricane Deck, so we get a bit wet even with the ponchos. Then we walked around Goat Island and considering it was in the mid to upper 70s and mostly sunny today, it didn’t take too long to dry off.
I’m sure they’d have frowned upon him taking it from the State Park, so it’s still there for others to enjoy the beauty.
Some photos from our day. The coolest thing for me was hearing the elk’s bugle call. He did it 4 times while we were watching.
Very cool! Great photos!
I love this!
You should print and frame this for your kitchen/bar area!!!
