Our favorite beach.
These photos are stunning! Mountainsoul - is the route through Independence Pass a really scary drive? I know there is a route that’s got some sheer drops and no guardrails, etc.! Just wondered b/c that would be a gorgeous place to visit!
Herb garden harvest today–sorrel and basil!
Thanks! Yes, it’s a narrow, curving road with few guardrails that can feel scary, but is safe as long as people aren’t driving recklessly. Like Trail Ridge Road through RMNP, the road is seasonal and closed during the winter. It’s just too unsafe to traverse then. It’s a beautiful drive with lots of little roadside areas to stop and enjoy the view.
I bought an interesting pottery vase from a local artisan gallery yesterday and stuck some wild flowers in it. Not sure where its final home will be, but it looked nice on a porch table while we enjoyed our evening cocktails.
Thanks, mountainsoul! Hmm…I might not be visiting that lake area then, until I overcome my fear of heights! Have family out there though, so will mention the beautiful location!
Don’t be deterred. You can get there following a mostly flat route.
The route from Denver is mostly highway. I-70W to Copper Mountain/Leadville exit. Then it’s an easy drive into Twin Lakes. There is a mountain pass along the way but it’s not as narrow or curvy as Independence.
Highway 285 is another easy route from Denver that winds through Buena Vista, a popular tourist destination known for its whitewater rafting. Both highway options would work for people coming from the western slope too.
That’s great to hear about the less harrowing (for me) routes out there! So stunning. Drove through Vail area recently - the Rockies are just jaw-dropping!
Saw this beauty on my walk this morning. Not the clearest photo as I had to zoom in. I had my dog with me and didn’t want to scare it away.
I love it when great blue herons fly low overhead—the shadow on the ground makes you think it’s a pterodactyl!!!
We went exploring down by the Rio Grande today and it was so beautiful. I am really enjoying the southwest!
Shark fishing of Montauk. Went out about 30 miles to the canyons. My sons and I landed this 13 foot (5 foot tail) 378 lbs Thresher Shark. Will be eating shark steak for some time and is on the menu at several local restaurants next few days😀
Particularly fun because it is a childhood fishing buddy of mine who owns the boat and each kid had worked as a mate on the boat for a summer in HS. We got to work as a team.
Responding to a very fair and polite question about the ethics of harvesting a fish like this…
We used rod and reel and all edible portions of the fish will be consumed.
I grew up in a community that fishing was a major contributor to the local economy and paid for a portion of my college education as a commercial clammer. I didn’t even consider this could disturb people. Sorry I certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone!
Amazing! Canada geese, the plague of the PNW, have also infested the Southwest!
