My daughter’s women’s college had their traditional May Day celebration with a parade of bagpipes and and students dressed in white and adorned with flower crowns. She is a senior and will be graduating in two weeks!

Our Charleston weekend. A house on Battery we toured and one of the coolest bars I’ve ever been to…5Church.

We didn’t eat there, but we did walk in and look around. Very cool!

Cool bar! Once upon a time, one of my professors in architectural history reminded us that you can better understand what a society values, by viewing the important architecture of their cities. For example: cathedrals in the middle ages; high rise banks or shopping centers in the late 90’s/ early 00’s. And now? bars, data centers and distribution centers? :grimacing:

I was hoping that the photos were of College of Charleston dorms & cafeteria.

That’s a cool bar. Our favorite coffee place pretty much ever was in a church (a functioning one) in the Bay Area. Absolutely beautiful and great coffee and ambiance.

We got up close to a great blue heron at Stokes State Forest, New Jersey. It was guarding something–a nest, maybe? NJ is associated with urban blight but there is so much beauty here.

So that’s what that bird is called…

Our house has a pond behind it and there is this neighborhood bird that always seems to frequent the shady areas around the shore. Never knew what the name of it was but it looks exactly like this. Thanks!

In fact those birds blend in very well. I was taking a walk one time and walked right by the bird. Must have gotten within 10 feet when it exploded. Nearly made me jump into the pond  :swimming_man: Those things are HUGE!

Huge and very graceful. The one pictured tiptoed into the water like a dancer. I wish I had a video.

Yes! Surprisingly, the take-off and flying is very quiet…

Great Blue Herons are one species that seem to exist in many different climates. We see them daily here on the St Lawrence, but I don’t know if they winter over. On our pond in PA they winter over and seem to have a tag team with who gets to fish our pond and when. In FL where we camp they are cute because they’re not scared of adults, but will move away quickly when kids are around. We joke that they tell themselves “the big ones are harmless, but beware of the cubs!”

When great blue herons fly overhead, the shadow they cast makes you think they’re a pterodactyl!!

Exactly! I have a photo of a blue heron that definitely looks like one. (If I could find it…) And they can curse really loudly if you spoil their fishing.

We see herons all the time kayaking. We also had one in residence on the pond at our old house. Just love watching them!

Our 7 month old cloud o’fluff after a nearly 4 mile walk. Poor baby hardly moved the rest of the day. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

And a couple pics I took last summer in the NC Blue Ridge. I want to have one of these blown up and framed. Still can’t decide which one though.

Bottom one IMHO.

It looks very much like what a professional would do. Very impressive!
