For those who aren’t aware, a rijstafel (‘rice table’) is like a buffet, but selections are set down at your table in small bowls. Rick Steves goes to a rijstafel in his Amsterdam episode. We had the chicken and beef version with about 12 different dishes (in 2019 it was about 22 euros). The super deluxe fish/chicken/beef version had close to 30 dishes and was about 33-ish euros. You place rice on your plate, then top it with one of the dishes. Some sweet some spicy some savory, etc. Was really cool.
In the 1600s Netherlands was probably the world’s wealthiest country due to its sea trading all over the world. Rembrandt, et al, are products of that golden age.
The only time we tried one was on a rocking boat by a pier in Aruba. One by one we got seasick and had to get off. Oh my. Never have we even thought about seeking out another one. But…great and fun concept. Oh, and my husband doesn’t like rice so there’s that. LOL.
We went to a rijstafel place years ago in Amsterdam – my decidedly culinarily unadventurous spouse loved it. Definitely worth the time to experience it!
This cracked me up. Got one of those generic “it’s time to update your homeowner’s insurance” from some Allstate agent, addressed to our older s (who hasn’t lived here in 15 years) with this photo!! It appears to be trees either by the parking lot of the neighborhood pool or the nearby school, neither of which are close to our address!
