I am a current junior in high school and I plan on taking Physics 0030 this summer as part of Brown’s Pre-Bacc program since I cannot fit Physics into my senior year schedule. My main concern is the difficulty of the course. I have taken Algebra 2 (H), Geometry (H), and am currently in Pre-AP Calculus (H). However, the course description says it uses some calculus techniques. I have covered a lot of trigonometry throughout geometry and pre-calculus, and I hear that that is used often as well, so I think I will be fine with that portion of the math. Will the calculus in this course be way over my head? Or will I be okay?
I believe it does use integrals and derivatives, so if you haven’t done those, I would not suggest taking the course.
I had a question about a course a few years ago that my daughter was thinking of taking (she did not end up going to the Brown Summer program, but is currently a Junior at Brown). I emailed a very similar question to the instructor, who I was able to find somehow online, and he answered the question specifically, I just looked at the email and it involved a course that, by description, would have included trigonometry and calculus, but the instructor indicated that not having advance high school math would not be a problem. So, I’d ask whoever is teaching the course if you can find out who that is. I don’t know if the ‘pre-bacc’ program is the same as summer at brown, but I’d still suggest asking the professor/instructor your question.
