Physical Anthropology program at Johns Hopkins University?

Hi! I was wondering what the physical/bio anthro program is like at JHU, if they have it? I am on the college search for class of 2020. Thanks!

I had to do the math on this one, but if you are searching for class of 2020 that means you won’t start college until Fall 2016, which means that you are currently a…junior in high school?

Anyway, a quick way to find out whether a university has some program you’re interested in is to visit the website. I visited JHU’s anthropology department website and was greeted with this, the first sentence on it:

The Department of Anthropology is one of the few in the country that focuses exclusively on socio-cultural anthropology

So that answers that question.

Quite a few people have been asking about physical and biological anthropology lately, so if you look around you might find those posts and some of the schools that have been suggested. Every time I answer the question I completely forget what the schools are - I seem to remember Boston University, Penn State, and Case Western being on the list, but I don’t remember, lol.

But I do want to add this - your interests are likely to shift and change a lot between now and when you select a major, so keep an open mind.

Secondly, and more importantly, you - as an undergrad - aren’t picking a “program” with few exceptions (nursing, engineering, maybe business). You’re selecting a college. Only 1/3 of your classes will actually be in your major; the rest will be divisional requirements and general education classes. Not only that, but the social life, atmosphere, student body, location, and other factors might be important factors. Again, I’m not saying that you don’t want to know about the availability and quality of a major - you wouldn’t want to go to a school that absolutely did not have physical anthropology, for example! But it’s not like selecting a program in the sense that the program’s quality and depth is the key factor in your decision. Save that for grad school, should you decide to go.
