physics 6 series, study abroad at sussex.

i heard that the physics 6 series is easier at the summer school in sussex? what are your thoughts? has anyone studied physics in the uk here before?

I second this question! I really want to know more about it since I"m planning to go for it next year. anyone gone?

I’ve not gone but I know people who have and also have taken the 6 series so maybe I can shed some insight.

People I know that took Physics at Sussex have told me that it was the most awesome experience. Especially if you are interested in traveling to the UK, going through this program is a good idea. Usually physics takes 3 quarters to finish, so doing it all over 1 summer is really efficient.

I heard it was pretty comparable to UCLA in terms of difficulty. The 6 series at UCLA is really easy though compared to other life-science requirements. So I suppose you shouldn’t let difficulty be a deciding factor.

Yah Im planning on taking it the 2012 Summer! That way it would be easier for me during the school year.

Thanks! Do you know anything about the living arrangements and how much free time we’ll have to actually go and explore?
Haha I’ll see you there Noxfinitie.

I remember reading somewhere that you get your own personal room. Oh I found it.

“You are required to live in dormitory housing on campus that is prearranged by the University of Sussex, but you can choose between standard or upgraded rooms. Regardless of the room, you will prepare your own meals in a shared kitchen. This is a large and popular program so you will be meeting and living with many other international students as well as UC students.”

I believe the standard room you don’t get your own bathroom, but the upgraded room you get your own private bathroom.

I know you only work on Mon-Thur and there are “special” trips on the weekends with the EAP group to like stonehedge and Paris. but these weekend trips require some extra cost, but I think it’s worth if especially when you are going with friends!

I’ll be looking forward to see you there charmedgirl!

“Yah Im planning on taking it the 2012 Summer! That way it would be easier for me during the school year.”

And you also get to be there during the 2012 Olympics.

OK, I’m currently taking physics here in Sussex and let me tell you, it is HARD. You have classes 16 hours a week, which includes labs, workshops and lectures.

There is no time to do anything. When I first applied, I imagined myself jetting off and traveling every weekend, but no; my life revolves around physics.

Nobody teaches you anything here. Yet you are still required to attend every lecture, lab, and workshop. Lectures are useless and labs are graded VERY harshly. There are weekly hw sets consisting of 25 HARD and very time consuming problems that I wouldn’t know how to start without looking it up online. You are basically expected to learn independently and ask the TAs in workshop if you need help.

The last midterm was 10 problems in 1 hour. Sounds doable, right? But guess what, the class average was below a 4, and a 4 is barely passing here. So many people complained to the instructor to no avail. Last I heard, five people packed up and flew home because the class is so difficult here.

I already regret coming here. The food is terrible and everything is EXPENSIVE. Honestly, I’m borderline depressed. I do like England-- don’t get me wrong-- but I’d only come here for vacation and not to study abroad. So be sure to think throughly if you think it’s worth paying a fortune to barely pass physics here, just because you don’t want to take a full year of it at your own institution.

edit

When I first applied, I heard nothing but great things too, like how “super easy” physics is here and that it’s a great gpa booster. However, according to the professor, they had to raise their standards from last year and made the course more difficult and calculus-based.

Cheers.

With regards to what sussexeap said, is there anyone else here who went over this past summer? I thought it sounded like a good opportunity, but if they recently made it significantly harder then I might rethink the option. Thanks in advance!

I didn’t go last summer since I am applying to go this 2012 Summer myself, but I had some friends that took it 2011 Summer. I talked to them and the counselors at UCLA and they said that they did make it significantly harder, but the counselor told me the grades of the students who went that summer and it was a lot of A’s and B’s with little F/D so that just tells me that those who got F/D don’t really know how to do physics/math or they weren’t just trying and they were trying to find an easy way out. Im sure that if you just did all the homework and memorized the formulas, then you’ll bound to get an A/B. The counselor told me that the physics program in England is still easier than the physics program at UCLA, even though UCLA’s physics program is kind of a joke.

Physics 6 series is easy
