physics 8 vs 7

what is the big difference between these courses? i can't get into physics 8 this semester, so is physics 8a hard in the spring? I heard that fajans and some other guy teach 8a in the spring and that they are both bad. is this true?

Well, I can give you a very basic description. The 7 series is math heavy and is good for those majoring in the physical sciences or engineering (it’s “for scientists and engineers” for a reason). The 8 series is not-so-math heavy (or with little math… some algebra, I believe). Everyone else, I guess, takes this series (or if they don’t, some take “Physics for Future Presidents”). I know for sure that bio majors take the 8 series.

Physics rotates the professors quite randomly so it’s hard to determine who will teach when. Don’t worry too much about it - I took the really hard prof that taught this spring (Speliotopoulos) for 8A and he was not TOO bad if you had physics background. Also, the curve is really generous compared to Chem3A/3B, Bio 1A, etc.

It is recommended not to do 7 series unless you are engineer/physical sciences b/c it’s really hard.

stly wht did u take in the fall? Im assuming bio with chem? if so, how was that?

I did Bio 1A/1AL & Chem 3B/3BL w/ a 4 unit breadth class. Not horrible, but we had firestone instead of forte (firestone is one of the easiest profs you can get).
