Physics at Richmond?

My daughter is seriously considering Richmond, and is currently interested in pursuing physics, perhaps through the PhD level. Can anyone provide good/bad experiences or other wisdom with Physics courses, professors, research, grad school receptiveness, for Richmond?

baywood, I was hoping someone with more than just one class in the sciences would respond, but alas, it appears as though I’ll have to help.

The sciences at UR are quickly improving. About 10 years ago, they made a big push to improve the department, and attracting top kids. As a freshman, you can do research with professors. You’ll never have a TA. The facility is very well equipped and is a fantastic place to call home. UR is also giving summer research stipends, so that students can continue their research over the summer on campus with their professors.

Here’s a quick blurb on one recent success story:
Jeff Zheng, Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship and Research
Zheng is a senior double major in physics and mathematics and received nominations for this award from both departments. He began doing research in his first year with Dr. Ted Bunn in physics, eventually publishing a paper in Physics Review. Zheng has researched with a group at the University of Toronto’s Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Control and will eventually be a co-author on a publication, which will result from this collaboration. He is completing an honors thesis this semester in mathematical physics under the supervision of Dr. Bill Ross in mathematics, and will pursue a Ph.D. in physics in the fall.

Thanks for your info, Spider. We’ve check out the website, and just noticed the physics blog. - baywood
