Physics Majors, and the other side of the coin.

Hi everyone-

I'm probably going to attend here as the full ride scholarship is really hard to turn down. I've been accepted to a very competitive school in San Antonio as well as an engineering college in Colorado. I'd rather not mention the names, but I'm sure they are easy to guess.

One thing is for sure-they are both expensive. Very expensive. Especially the one in Colorado (no word on scholarship yet) The one in San Antonio is very expensive WITH a small scholarship. They are however, excellent schools with long time, proven reputations.

The thing is-how serious is this place? Yes the other schools will hose my folks financially, but at the same time I don't want to get stuck at a glorified CC even if it is free. I just don't know what's what. I've visited the campus and my impression is generally good.

I'm a serious student, seeking to major in physics. I'm not into partying and want to get down to business as soon as possible.

Any response will be much appreciated, especially from a current STEM student. Those who are going, I'm looking forward to meeting you.

if you’re not into partying, utd would be a good fit for you. as for the physics department, they have good professors, but i dont think the department is very big. Not sure because I only took physics I and II.

While Mines is an excellent engineering school with a great reputation, for physics I don’t think it’s necessarily better than UTD. Unless you think you might want to switch into engineering other than EE, I’d go to UTD.

If you want to be a physics major, you can check out PhysicsForums for more info on that.

PhysicsRule, I’m not sure exactly what area of physics you plan to go into but I can say that there is a good bit of cross-disciplinary work that goes on at UTD. I’d encourage you to see if the specific professors have interests in the same areas that you do.

As for the quality of the faculty here, I’ll share this link with you. At a time when other major Universities are letting faculty go, UTD is growing in leaps and bounds. This shows the quality of some of the recent additions in the engineering school. Graduates of places like CalTech, Stanford, Hopkins and Georgia Tech are choosing UTD.
Either way, you seem highly driven and I know you’ll do great wherever you go.

Hey everyone-
Thanks for the replies, I should have responded sooner. I’m planning another visit soon to try to sit in on some classes. I was told that arrangements with the department was necessary so I’m probably let my mom call them today. Thanks again-any current physics major at UTD, if you are out there, PM me!
Thanks.
