Physics is key for any engineering college you apply to. If you are interested in engineering you should try and do physics.

Physics is not required, per se, at some high schools, but the colleges will see your course rigor on your transcript. Some high schools don’t offer physics.

When you are planning to major in engineering, the three engineers in my family would advise you to take physics in high school. If it’s available take the physics course. Basic concepts will be introduced. If physics and math courses are a weakness for you then you may not want to major in engineering.

When you get to college level physics, it will be a “college level” physics course. It will be introduced at a rapid rate and a number of the students in that course will have already had an introduction to physics courses at their high schools.

Ultimately, it is your decision, with the advisement of your high school counselor.

Are you a senior applying this year?

If you are not yet a senior, I would agree with the other posters, and urge you to take physics! It’s not just important for admissions; it will also be useful for you to be exposed to physics concepts in high school, and will give you a sense of whether you enjoy this subject.

If you are already a senior and you have not taken physics, it would help to know how many years of science courses you have had, and which science and math courses have you taken?

If anyone has suggestions for self-learning physics courses or online channels, and perhaps if they cover topics relevant to AP Physics 1, 2 and C, that would be most welcome.

All else being equal, not taking Physics will be worse than taking Physics, yes. And more so than most other courses.

SJSU does not specifically consider physics courses taken for frosh admission: Impaction | Admissions

However, it is better to have had high school physics before taking college physics. Seeing physics for the first time in college will make it more difficult than if you saw some concepts in high school.
