How is the PHY 103 and 104 courseload? Especially along with Orgo and Calc 2? I've only had experience with mechanics and no electromagnetism. Will PHY 103 and 104 be too difficult to keep up with?

Depends on you + your strengths. I thought that it was pretty difficult, but for other people it just clicks. PHY 103 / 104 were hands down my least favorite courses. Well, mostly 103. I liked 104 a LOT better.

Sounds like you’re going to have to take them freshman year b/c of your interests if you’re doing Orgo + Calc with them. What I learned in 103/104 was: quantity of effort != quality of work produced. I had to learn to be a lot better at studying. I did a lot better in 104 than in 103 because I finally kinda got my act together! But I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t super fun. I came in with some high school mechanics experience as well.

You’ll probably be able to handle it just fine, though – try not to take writing sem in the fall, maybe, and pick an easier (no-problem-sets, maybe) fourth course. 103/104 typically have weekly homeworks, frequent (and important) quizzes, and a couple of really big tests.

So basically: don’t be afraid of taking it, but be aware that it’ll be some not-so-fun work. Good luck :)

Thanks! I’m taking a freshman seminar in the fall so that’ll ease the load a bit. Though the writing seminar and comp sci come in the spring. What study habits should I develop to be successful? How did you do it?

Get “How to be a Straight A Student” by Cal Newport. It’s really helped me. Also, read his blog.

Trust me. $10 for much improved study habits.
