Piano Audition for non-players

My darling D was called back and is not TERRIFIED at the idea of a piano audition. She has never had a lesson and doesn’t want it to blow her chances. She is auditioning at the Chicago Unifieds. Any insight and words I can give her to soothe her is MUCH appreciated!

correction: I should have said is NOW TERRIFIED. :)

From what I have heard, the piano portion has little to do with whether or not she will get accepted to the program. It is mainly used for placement, meaning, if accepted she would probably be placed in the beginner piano class. If she wants to prepare for it I would suggest getting a beginner piano book (Bastien books are good) and practicing on her own a little each day. They will probably give her something similar to sightread–easy children’s songs. Either way she should not sweat it. Hope that helps.

PelkyAgain is correct. Piano is for placement.

that does help. She is in a class where she has to do some composing so she can plunk some things out (with some difficulty). Also, she is a bell player/ percussionist so she can read music. She jsut really has never PLAYED piano or ever really had a lesson. That helps me tremendously! Thanks so much!

Michigan’s policy of having all MT majors learn piano is a good one. You may get cast in a show someday with new music that you’ve never heard and is not available on youtube or other recordings. The musical director might hand you sheet music and ask you to learn your part before the next rehearsal. Plunking out a melody is all you really need for that.

Are there any MT programs that don’t require piano?
