Does anyone know about any piano recital/audition/competition/etc. opportunities for a 13-year-old?

I live in San Francisco, so I'm open to anything in the bay area as well.

I have a friend who knows tons of information about this stuff. You can contact him here..

Alternatively, here

Well I've been playing since a little kid, but I'm not that advanced or anything. For example I can play the original version of Schubert's Serenade?

Dear Grasshopper,

You will be complete when you master this

I wonder how you try out on piano for All-State orchestra. Do you think its generally competitive?

I don't think they do piano auditions for all-state orchestra. In VA, they just have state and district piano competitions. I've been playing for 10 years and I've never heard of any all-state orchestra audition.

Ask your teacher.

If you are thinking about music exams...there's ABRSM.

ABRSM has some good exams for a wide spectrum of musical instruments (virtually all of the winds, strings, brass, percussion, and of course, piano). They rank their exams on a Grade 1 to Grade 8 basis...with Grade 8 being the most advanced. I reached cello Grade 6 after just two and half years of cello...and I reached piano Grade 8 in about five or six years of piano. I wouldn't say it is a tough exam, but you'll have to know a lot of the technical aspects (scales, arpeggios, sight reading, sight singing, recognizing pitch, rhythm, tone...etc.). And even if you pass Grade 8, there's still DipABRSM, which is supposed to be a valid test if you are thinking of applying to a music conservatory.

The exam is sponsored by the Royal Schools of Music in England, and is fully recognized by colleges, schools...etc.

Check them out here: www.abrsm.org (I'm pretty sure you can find a testing center somewhere near your location).

ps. They also have Music Theory tests...you are required to pass Grade 5 before you can register for any Skills test above Level 5.

There are mtna (music teachers of nation association) mtna.org. However, to get to those national competitions, you have to get through local competitions. Check the Music Teachers Association for your state. Also, most city-orchestras have concerto competitions. If you win, then you get to perform with them for some amount of time. Hope that helps!

How competitive are the national competitions, do you think?

They are more competitive as you are older (they have 3 age group competitions at nationals). However, I'm pretty sure it is pretty competive, however not impossible. Competition is middle-of-the-road I think.
