Hello everyone,

I wanted to get some input on this. I have to choose between Peking U (MEcon in Quant. Finance) and Johns Hopkins (MS in Applied Mathematics (Fin. Math will be my AOC)). I am looking at the bigger picture and trying to see from the corporate standpoint (national and int. level) whether JHU or PKU would be more useful. PKU has a great reputation in Asia/China and is among the top universities there. JHU however is more recognized I'd say and would possibly help me much more getting into the corporate world. I am planning on working in the banking industry once I am done with my degree. I looked at the background of some people that work for some of the larger firms and they all have mostly Western European/ US education, even in Asia! For many reasons I am more drawn to PKU, but JHU will possibly open more doors for me. If I could work in China or Hong Kong that would be great, but knowing I am a foreign citizen, it may be close to impossible to obtain a work permit. Plus I'd have to learn the language fairly quickly. The great thing about PKU is that they also offer a joint-degree program with NUS, which would be a plus, considering I'd also live in Singapore for a year. Then again, Johns Hopkins is also a great school. So maybe some of you guys can give me some input on this. My question is which schoolswould you guys choose and why?

Thank you.

I feel like JHU wouldn’t hinder you from living in China anyways, since it is internationally recognized. But you give a lot of reasons for JHU, and not really much for PKU. what are the pros of PKU? why do you want to live in China?

I attended Hong Kong U and really enjoyed the culture and people there. Peking U has a remote location in Shenzhen (HSBC Business School) which is approx. an hour away from HK as well and I will be attending there. Besides the cultural aspect, PKU has the better curriculum, but JHU offers a broader degree (applied math) which provides me with additional options. But then again, China provides many great opportunities also. I am more concerned about what happens after completion of my studies. In case I won’t be able to work in Asia for whatever reason, how is a PKU degree recognized in the (int.) corporate world? I understand it is tough for many on here to answer this question, but maybe someone has some insight on this.

JHU Pros:
- Great reputation academically and professionally
- Great program
- Degree is more applicable to other areas

JHU Cons:
- Just the area really (high crime rate outside of school perimeter)

PKU Pros:
- Great academic reputation
- Number 1 or 2 University in China
- Faculty and program is great
- Possibility to intern and work in China
- Low tuition (But that is not a factor for me)

PKU Cons:
- International Reputation in the corporate world?
- Chances of working in places other than SE Asia?
