Picking something, anything

I don’t know if this belongs in this sub-forum but I’ll put it here anyway - move it mods if you need to.

So I have in mind a Spanish degree. But I wouldn’t know what to do with it. Yes, there’s translator, teacher… Linguist. Yawn. I’m not good at any of the skills those things require.

I want to learn Spanish, and one day I will learn it.

But for now I need a college degree.

I don’t know what I’m interested in, and I ask myself that plenty - to no avail. I have no career counselor to ask. I refuse to take the MBTI.

Any ideas?

You can major if Spanish and then get a job that doesn’t necessarily require a Spanish major. About 70% of college graduates don’t end up working in their major field.

A degree in most subjects, including Spanish, will probably only get you a job that you might have been able to get without any college degree at all. There are already plenty of people who can speak Spanish without majoring in it. Some of them have degrees in marketable subjects such as business, IT or engineering.

Try to find out what employers recruit what majors from your school. College has become job training, like it or not.

@DTBTSE I can’t major in any of those. Too much math.

I’ll keep looking.

Click through the different professions and then decide what you might be interested in. Learning Spanish is wonderful and will benefit you in many jobs in the US or abroad but you might want to at least minor in something to broaden your skill set.

Spanish will be very useful in many professions, especially if your college focuses on civilization/culture rather than literature (literature is important but for practical applications, intercultural skills matter more). Plan to spend a semester, or, better, a year abroad - including 1/2 Latin America and 1/2 Spain perhaps, or one year in one place including an internship. Add a minor in communication (intercultural communication) or Human resources.
