Pitt Junior here, any questions?

I think your daughters are in the ballpark for scholarships and the honors college.

Here are some threads about the honors college and merit scholarships:

Thank you for the information. I'm off to do some reading!

I got housing yay....
There's still a lot to be sorted out though. I think I've already trekked 5 miles' worth between Panther Central and other buildings

Nice, where you staying? Hope you didn't get stuck in towers.

What would be so bad about the towers?

Lothrop. The seclusion is nice but the walks to the eating locations are brutal when you're tired.

Do you guys know any gyms that aren't as crowded as the one in Peterson's?

^Trees Hall Weight Room. Keep walking up the Petersen steps and take a left. It will fall to your right. Its a much more basic and hardcore gym.

What can you share about the nursing program ?

Is it used by more hardcore people as well? I'm not exactly of body builder physique

Motherof2girls, I don't know much about the nursing program, but if you search the University of Pittsburgh thread, you'll find quite a bit. Pitt has an excellent nursing program, one of the top in the country. My daughter (who is a sophomore) had a friend in the program last year. D said that all the kids study together and support one another to get through it. It is a demanding program.

With regard to the Pitt nursing program; one essential point to keep in mind is that there are 100 seats each year for the program. Once those seats are taken, subsequent applicants will be declined. (I don't know if there is or not, but I would suppose that there is a waiting list, but...) Pitt operates on a rolling admissions basis, and in Nursing, as with all of Pitt's limited-availability programs - the early applicant has a great advantage.

Applications for nursing should be in and complete BEFORE the end of October to stand a decent chance of acceptance. Earlier is better!!

what are the deadlines to submit applications for a regular college?

There's really no "drop dead" deadline for applying at Pitt. January 15 is the deadline for applicants looking to get into the scholarship pool and some other graduate program guarantee programs. Otherwise, Pitt accepts applicants all school-year long. I really want to emphasize however, the earlier you apply, the better your chances for acceptance into any school or program at Pitt. Also, later admittees will generally be directed into one of the branch campuses, if that is any consideration.

January 15 is too late for scholarships at Pitt. The money will be gone by then, judging from years prior. I would say to apply no later than Nov. 30 if you want merit money. I'm referring to the full-tuition Honor College scholarship and also the half-tuition one.

I was at their open house and they mentioned some date in the middle of October that I wrote down but now can't find where. My D is taking SAT on Oct 3 and I'm afraid it might be too late to submit that score on time.

The Oct. 3 sitting should be okay. When does your daughter get the results? Two years ago, my daughter applied to Pitt on Nov. 14. She got her acceptance two weeks after that, and about a week later received a letter telling her she had won a scholarship. It was great for the whole family to know that she had a solid acceptance that we could afford. That made the rest of the process so much easier to bear.

These days, though, as the economy continues to stumble and sources of student loans dry up, scholarships are even more in demand. So I would recommend applying as soon as you have all your ducks in a row (recs, scores, essay, etc.).

I was wondering what any of you thought is my chance to get into Pitt.

Let me preface by saying that I am very familiar with Pitt: my parents went there, I spent a lot of time down there this summer because I have few friends that go there, and I went to a Community College that a lot of people transfered to Pitt from.

With that said, I'm going to Marshall University right now, which is the only place I wanted to transfer to. This is my first semester here and it's fine, but I've been pondering the idea of switching majors from English to Linguistics, and Pitt has a linguistics program and Marshall doesn't.

I went to a community college for two years and I'm now at Marshall, majoring in English. My gpa was only 2.87, but I got A's in 4 of 4 English classes.

So I'm a sophomore, have a 2.87, am taking a 300 English class and 400 linguistics class (and three other classes), and am thinking about applying to Pitt this December for the fall.

If I get a like a 3.5 semester and bring my GPA up to a 3.0, do you think I have a chance at getting in for linguistics? (I would think that it would look good if I got a's/b's in a 300 English class and a 400 linguistics class.)

Although it's not a requirement to get into the linguistics department, I haven't taken any college-level foreign language.

I know a few people who transfered from my community college that only had grades around a 3.0, so I'm thinking that I might have a chance at getting in. On the other hand, I know a person from Pitt Johnston that had a 3.2 who didn't get in when he tried to transfer.

So I'm not sure what chance I would have...

How soon do you wish to transfer flaneur?

I think with a strong performance over the next semester (or two), you could make a case that you've experienced personal growth with regard to your academics. Of course, you'd have to do well, as in a 3.5-4.0, to make that argument.

Also, I'm surprised a UPJ guy didn't get in with a 3.2. I think from CCAC, a 3.0 is all that is needed.

Hey i really need some help. Im a junior at RPI in Albany, Ny and im taking Biochemistry. My proffessor transferred from the University of Pittsburg this year and I was wondering if anyone could give me any info on her. Her name is Professor Susan Gilbert.

My email is: rastoa2@rpi.edu

Thanks!

Does anyone know about the linguistics program? I am a prospective student for the Fall 2009 term and I am trying to find as much information as possible. If anyone knows anything about linguistics, languages, and/or the study abroad program, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks.
