I am a senior in high school and I have already been accepted into Pitt, and I will be applying to BU RD soon. I have received the NROTC scholarship, so money is not an issue when it comes to my decision between these schools. I am interested in studying either biological sciences or mechanical/aerospace engineering. I also know that Pitt is a good school for sports and school spirit, which is important to me. BU also has a great hockey team. I am unsure what school to attend, so I was wondering how the schools are according to:
Academics (Bio sciences or mech/aero eng)
School Spirit
Student life
These are important things to me, and I have visited both schools so that is not the issue. I’d like to get some other people’s opinions on what they think about each school. Thanks.
Something else to consider…How is admission into engineering at BU?
At Pitt you are admitted into general engineering and are required to take a freshman seminar where you are exposed to all the disciplines within engineering. You choose your specific engineering major after your first year.
IMO it is a big deal to get a direct admit to the field that you want to study.
I’d think that Pitt has more school spirit as it has big time sports (BU has better hockey it isn’t big in the other sports) and more of a campus feel.
BU is right in Boston, not traditional campus but a great city.
Have you visited? What environment do you prefer?
I’d choose BU if only for potential more intern/co-op options-connections with high-tech companies in Boston area (esp. robotics). Also Boston > Pittsburgh. It’s also a fair bit higher ranked than Pitt if that means anything.
insanedreamer…yes not only is the city of Pittsburgh’s universities and companies on the cutting edge of medical and technology research (ironically in reference to your statement about robotics… the mothership for cutting edge robotics research is Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh)
Pittsburgh has lots of colleges both in the city and surrounding area too (it is a college “town”). amazing restaurants , neighborhoods, the buildings are rented out to capacity and all kinds of companies are tapping into Pittsburgh STEM sector .
everyone I know who has gone to Pittsburgh in the last couple of years says the same thing…it is an awesome place, I really enjoyed it …I thought it was an old abandoned steel town. (it is almost the same statement every time)
p.s. I personally would choose u of Pitt. .
Yes, I was aware of CMU’s cutting-edge work in robotics, but not that it had translated into much for Pittsburgh itself. The Boston area is pretty well known for its high-tech industries, but I didn’t realize Pitts had come such a long ways in recent years. Good to know.
