I was accepted to both Pitt and Duquesne for next fall. Duquesne offered me a 14k scholarship (merit) and acceptance to their Honors college. Pitt offered me neither. (SATs: 1360/2040, GPA: around 4.0)

I grew up in a family that attended/still attends Pitt, follows the teams, etc. The only reason I am not jumping into Pitt head first is that I would love to study Criminal Justice as a second major (first being foreign language), and Pitt main does not offer that, even as a Sociology concentration. (Duquesne offers it as a concentration.)

My other "issue" is the foreign language major I want. Duquesne offers a "Modern Languages" major; you study three languages (I would take Spanish, French/Italian, and Arabic). Pitt does not offer any type of degree (major/minor/concentration) in Arabic.....I will take Spanish no matter where I go. I want to study languages but neither has the exact combo I'd love (Spanish, Russian and Arabic as part of a major).

I guess what I'm asking for is...advice on which college you/your family member liked academics wise, what students REALLY think of it, etc. I've read other threads/sites, but none are really close to my situation with the majors I want. Should I sacrifice the Criminal Justice/Sociology major at a cheaper college for the familiarity and closeness I feel with Pitt? Help!! :/

How does Pitt’s Administration of Justice differ from what you want out of Criminal Justice? Pitt-Bradford and, I think, Pitt-Greensburg offer Criminal Justice, but I’m not sure how that differs form Pitt-main’s Admin of Justice.

Pitt is very strong in languages and international studies, and I think Pitt offers Arabic through its “less commonly taught” languages. See here.

One thing for sure, Duquesne is generally more expensive, and it isn’t as good of school (sorry Dukes, it just isn’t). Even if Pitt didn’t give you admissions to the Honors College as a first-semester freshman, you can still be “in the honors college”. Pitt’s honors college isn’t closed membership. As a freshman, you need advisors permission to take classes, after that, just a minimal GPA, but you can participate as long as you are motivated to do so, and be part of the Honors College. It is meant to be available to anyone that is motivated to take advantage of it.

Anyway, all the Pittsburgh universities have an agreement where you can take classes at one college as long as they aren’t offered at you home college. So if you are at Pitt and want to take something at Duquesne, and vice versa, you can probably do so, and you pay the tuition rate at your home institution. You might want to keep that in mind and investigate those programs further.

What is it that you want to do with a Criminal Justice major? Perhaps there is another equally good way to reach the same goal with another major and/or grad school.

I’m trying to choose between majoring in marketing at Pittsburgh University vs majoring in health supply chain management at duquesne university which will hopefully lead to a future in pharmaceutical business. Student life seems to be so much more diverse and fun at Pittsburgh but Duquesne is awesome in a completely different way. As for my future career, I’m hoping that if I go to Duquesne I’d be employed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals in the future but if I go to Pitt the major is more broad filled with an expansion of career opportunities. I’m trying to pick based off where I’d enjoy college life more and where I’d receive better chances of a successful well-paid future. Does anyone have opinions on which of the two I should choose?
