Pitt vs. Northwestern

I was offered a full ride to Pitt and I have been accepted to Northwestern, no word on financial aid yet. Assuming I get some sort of aid from NU, it will be a tough decision. Any advice?

What are you planning to major in? For example, if you are planning to be a journalism major, then definitely Northwestern since Medill is amazing. But if you are thinking health sciences such as pre-med or nursing, Pitt is a great choice especially with your full ride.

I am thinking of being either an econ or a math major, or maybe double majoring in those two areas. I know Northwestern has a very good econ program, I don’t really know much about their math program. But Pitt has a math-econ joint major that seems like a pretty attractive option.

def. northwestern. i’m jealous. NU was my dream school. I didn’t get in.

good luck with your decisions!

I turned down Northwestern for Pitt full tuition. Econ is also one of my majors so I can comment on that.

Some things: Northwestern isn’t good with financial aid. I didn’t get anything from them and had I attended I would have had to pay sticker price, so the decision to not go to NU was rather easy.

Going to Pitt, however, you’d have to deal with the typical stuff state schools have, like huge intro classes, especially with econ. My advice is to place out of intro micro and macro or get into the honors sections if you can, because even though the regular sections are easy you’re stuck in a 300 person class. After the intro classes however, the class sizes become significantly smaller.

Also, Northwestern is on the quarter system and Pitt is on the semester system. I didn’t really pay attention to this back in high school but I’m glad I’m not on the quarter system, which tends to go faster and you’re in school until late June as opposed to May like most colleges.

Both Evanston and Pittsburgh are cold in the winter but Evanston is colder… I honestly don’t remember much of my visit to NU but Pitt’s campus is much more urban than NU’s.

schritzo, thanks for the insight. NU gave me $10000 a year, but it would still be close to $50000 a year which i find to be insane for what i consider to be a minimal difference in academic quality. i’m definitely leaning towards Pitt right now, but my parents want me to think about it for a week just in case. i’ve also heard that there are honors courses in both intro to macro and intro to micro. is this true? if so, do i have to test into them, or am i able to enroll in those classes straight up if i was accepted into the honors college?

*schrizto. sorry

^Straight-up if you were accepted to the UHC

thanks for your help guys. just thought i’d let you know that i’m going to pitt.

My son chose Pitts full ride vs Upenns high cost. He didn’t even apply to NW since we heard they don’t give aid.

I could understand the OP’s pain. My son once to consider to sell Yale for the Pitts because of the cost difference, but I ask him if he do so, make sure he will not regret in the future. He finally decide live a life without regret.
