Hi--any advice on choosing between pitzer and oxy? pitzer has the advantage of being part of claremont colleges, but does it feel like the dumb stepchild since it is not as competitive as the others? also heard that oxy is a bit of a commuter school--many flee campus on the weekends? true?

Dumb stepchild!

My guess is that the students are a little less intense/driven at Pitzer than Pomona/CMC/Mudd, but that can be a very good thing.

i hope you know i was joking! the caliber of students at pitzer is apparently extremely high–i just wonder though if there is any kindof inferiority complex since the other claremont schools are so much harder to get into? and if so–is it hard on the pitzer students?

I think it depends on the environment. I imagine living at OXY vs living at Pitzer is a major difference. The claremont colleges alone will add diversity to your experience. If you look at Pitzer’s statistics their admissions rate has dropped significantly in the last couple of years.
i’d take into consideration the student body and your prospective major.

All I know is that Oxy is definitely more urban than suburban, so the two campuses have really different feels. There are many more ‘cheap eats’ for students around Oxy than around the Claremont Consortium.

The CC is in a quieter, calmer environment, in terms of the surrounding area.

Also, I wouldn’t characterize Oxy as a commuter school AT ALL. The majority of students come from out of state, or a combo of out of state and upstate, so I can’t see how it could be a commuter school. There’s also, this year, a three year requirement to live on campus, so the campus is quite busy.
