Alright there must be SOMETHING wrong here.

When I went in to take my test last Saturday before Mother's Day I was certain that I at least got 80% of the questions right on the PreCalc portion of the test, but yet they place me in PreCalc? I mean there were about a couple of questions I was fuzzy about, especially the log ones b/c I haven't used logs since Algebra 2.

Is it a mistake on their part? They also said that it takes 2 weeks to grade each portion, but they gave it to me today which was only 4 days. I'm in AP Calc AB (which is the highest math class offered at our school) and I already aced PreCalc (with a freaking 93 in my junior year) in HS. If it were on my part (not to sound arrogant but I AM CERTAIN its not me me, but them) is there something I can do about this?

If you want to take calculus, you must have solid foundation of precalc especially if you’re an engineer. That includes being able to recognize little details and traps here and there that lie within the problem. I don’t know. Maybe you made careless mistakes when you took the placement test.

They grade the placement tests in 2 weeks the latest; if I remember correctly, they graded mine very quickly. You can try calling them to question about your placement. If you are in calculus AB right now and got a 4 or 5 on the AP test, you can try to talk to the dean about this after your score comes out.

That’s fine, maybe you got some bad breaks on a few of the questions. Did you take the ap test(s) and did you think you got a 4 or a 5 on AB or BC? If you did you can just cash that in and go straight into the course after it without worry. Otherwise go here first week
[Mathematics Department - Special Permission](http://math.rutgers.edu/undergrad/specperm.html) and ask for special permission

Well I didn’t take the AP tests because I wanted to take Calc 1, just in case if I’ve missed anything in AP Calc, but I didn’t want to take all the way back to PreCalc. It’s so ironic that the math class I got the best grade from ends up that I have to take it again.

I will contact them and see what happens. @needsmoresleep I will look into that more, but does the success in special permission happen quite often?

You have to have a tangible evidence that you are able to handle calculus I. Your grade in HS class means little since each teacher runs his/her class differently; so the purpose of the AP test is to provide a fairly established standardized test to everyone so they can tell who’s eligible to tackle calculus at a certain level.

@Sixflags Ahhh crap. Well PreCalc was taught by what many in our school considers to be the best math teacher, but I suppose you’re right that every school is wired a little different.

It’s just that I’m pee’d off that the 3 log questions were the blocking factor because first off I stopped using logs in the middle of Algebra 2 and in AP Calc there was no freaking log problems in the AP mock exams, and we had to take these mocks every freaking day.

Well I will contact them, maybe they can override me or not, but I don’t wanna be taking a class I aced and be in school for 5 years because of PreCalc.

Ya this actually is very bad because now this prevents you from taking chem for engineers, physics, and I think one other course so you are basically wasting a semester doing nothing. I would try to settle this with the dean. I’m sure you guys can arrange another placement test day to retest.

I would recommend what Leah said. See if there is a 2-4 week pre-calc class at a CC you can take if they do not give you permission to move into Calc 1.

Definitely take the precalc at cc and make sure it transfers too. You will be behind if you can’t start at least calc 1 as an engineering major.

You can actually take chem and phys for engineering if you were placed in precal115. However, that class sucks.
You can also take a retake of the math precal placement test. You have to call the math department and schedule an advancement test( i think its called that). The test they give is the precal 115 final from spring semester. Precal is a course that is not curved so whatever you get in your exams will most likely be your final grade or the next grade up so it might be a good idea to take that test if you took precal in highschool

Oh wow thanks! I’ve heard that you can’t retake the test from some people and the secretary mentioned that the test the first time is usually final, but it might be just an early case of the RU Screw. Well anyways I will keep thin mind!
