I had some questions :S

So I'm trying to take some Chinese classes at Penn. I'm Chinese, so I do have a good deal of experience... but to get into the higher classes, I need to take a placement test, which apparently takes place at the new student orientation.

So I'm kind of confused how I can fit in the right Chinese class after the registration period in August. Once I know what Chinese level to take, would I be able to shift around my courses that I tried to register for already during the registration period in August, in the case that the Chinese course doesn't fit into my schedule?

Yes, you can shift classes later. Make sure you talk to your adviser though.

Also, have you considered starting with CHIN 031 - Beginning Chinese I for Fluent Speakers? I have heard good things about the class and they just sit around and chat a lot. It’s very good if you’re just looking to learn Chinese and not pursue a major or minor. Although I hear there is a decent amount work (maybe it’s because the students are all Chinese, lol?).

Yeah, I tried applying to that class, but with my current schedule, it would clash with my MGMT. I’m wondering if I could take the intermediate chinese for fluent speakers.

^If a class is only offered at one timeslot and an important one like Chinese, then you should be able to have your management class moved.

hiyo, im in the same boat as you. Both chin 031 classes conflict with my management class and recitation so i can only take the chin 231 (intermediate chinese class).

My advisor said that i can sign up for it and then take the placement test when i get there or something like that… i dont know if other current penn students can back me up on this, but the system wont deny me the chance of registering for chin 231, if i havent completed the prereq??

Call someone in the Chinese department and they can clear you to take it. I did it with a different class.

Hm, so I guess the advance scheduling is over today, I might call them and see if I can get cleared for when the official registration starts I guess
