I was signing up for orientation and it asked about language placement tests. Are they absolutely required? From what I understood they can help you test out of a few language classes. I took Spanish in high school so am I required to take a Spanish placement test? Ha thanks for any help =)

You want to take a placement test in Spanish; otherwise, they’ll put you in the first class learning the alphabet and numbers!

I took 4 years of spanish AP classes in high school but I understood it better and learned a lot more when I took SPN601D at UT. Our professor didn’t care if we took the placement test and I’m glad I stayed in the first spanish. Spanish I covers basic present and past tenses. Spanish II which is SPN 610D covers subjunctive and future (and I think we might be doing some past tense next, but we’ve already needed to have knowledge of past tense so it might build on that in the next few weeks). If anything, just take spanish I anyway and get an A. While it really depends on how much you already know, it isn’t the easiest class and does have quite a bit of work but an A for 6 hours is awesome.

What if we took the AP test for Spanish Language in high school and scored at least a 4? Is the UT placement test still required? Or am I even required to take Spanish?

With a 4 on the AP Spanish language test, you can test out of the first two semesters of spanish, but to earn fourth-semester proficiency, you’ll still need to take SPN 611D which is the 3rd semester of spanish. Other languages are 5 hours long for 4 semesters, and spanish is now 3 semesters for 6 hours each (but it counts as fourth semester proficiency)

Other AP credits can be found at: [Search for Exams by Type Center for Teaching and Learning](http://ctl.utexas.edu/programs-and-services/student-testing-services/search-for-exams-by-type/#20)

So a fourth-semester proficiency is required to graduate?

If you are in the College of Liberal Arts, then fourth-semester proficiency is required. If you are in the College of Natural Sciences, then only two semesters of a language is required. I don’t know about the other colleges, but I’m pretty sure Cockrell doesn’t require a language.

I have a question regarding registering for classes,
since I will be attending the summer orientation ~ 6/22, how will registering for classes work if I have AP credits? (will they received my scores by then?)
