We’re looking into possibly getting a bike for our daughter who’s an incoming freshman. (She won’t have a car.) Does anyone have any recommendations on places to buy a used or new bike near Bard? We’re flying in from California and will be driving up from Newark or NYC, so places along the way to Bard are fine too. We’re not looking for a fancy racing bike. Just a low-end commuter type bike will do.

Also, Kingston is the nearest “city” to Bard, and it’s off the NY State Thruway, so you’ll drive through Kingston on your way to campus if you’re coming up from EWR. Kingston has several bike shops, as well as Target, Gander Mountain, and Wal Mart.

In Kingston: Bike Brothers 336-5581; Sports Authority 336-0630 (everything 845).

Another question - when I was in college (long ago), bike theft was pretty common on campus, even when you locked your bike. (There were some very enterprising bike thieves at my school.) Does this happen often at Bard? I would imagine not, since it’s a much smaller college than where I attended. But I’m assuming most student do lock their bikes while in class or at night?

Yes. According to my friend at Bard, bike theft is extremely common. Her bike was stolen in the beginning of the year, and she never saw it again. The tour guide at Bard also advised not to bring a very expensive bike, because it would probably be stolen or “borrowed” at some point.

wow. that doesn’t speak very highly of the students! I am really shocked at this, to be honest.

And, doesn’t Bard have a cycling team? Don’t those students need good road bikes? What do they do with their bikes?

My S has a really good road bike, since he loves cycling, and it is very distressing to think he can’t bring it up and enjoy the rides there – if he picks Bard.

D has had a decent bike there all year, never stolen. This is because she locks it up.

At any school in the country, if you don’t lock up your bike, it will be borrowed or stolen. This is not exclusive to Bard.

My D said that “borrowing” prevails. It’s a huge campus, and if you’re late for class and you find an unlocked bike, you’ll hop on it and get to class on time. More often than not, someone who had their bike “borrowed” will find their bike at another part of campus later that week, and just retrieve it.

The old adage is “your bike lock should cost more than your bike” will serve you well wherever you decide to matriculate.
