Are there any malls or shops within reasonable distance at Pitt? Extra points if there's a Hot Topic or any other cool stores.

Southside Works has some stores. Also try the Waterfront. The closest “Mall” I can think of is probably South Hills Village.

I’m not sure about all of the shopping in town and suburbs, but I know you can easily get to South Hills Village on the T (for free!), where you will find many clothing store choices, including Hot Topic.

That’s great! How do I get on the “T”?

You get a bus (any 61 or 71) on Fifth Avenue to downtown, get off at the Grant Street stop, go into Steel Plaza trolley stop and get a trolley (42s or 47s - it must end in “s”) to South Hills Village. It will drop you off right at the edge of the Macy’s parking lot. It all takes about 30 to 40 minutes if it is not rush hour.

If you need to know how to use public transportation, they can tell you how to get places at the information desk in the Schenley Student Union building. You can also go on this website for the Port Authority Trip Planner and get travel info.

Many students go to the Waterfront to eat and shop. I think you can get a bus (59U) directly from Oakland to the Waterfront.

Alright, thanks for the info!

Directly on Forbes Avenue are Rue 21 and Amaerican Apparel. The most popular mall is the Waterfront, which you take the 59U to get to. Its a big outdoor mall with shops like American Eagle, Hollister, Macys, Ulta, Wet Seal, Victoria’s Secret, Gap… I wanna say there’s a Hot Topic, but I never shop there so I can’t remember. They also have a lot of restaurants, a Dave and Buster’s, and a huge movie theatre.

There’s also Southside Works, which you take the 59U going downtown (same bus, opposite direction). It’s smaller, but I go there for the H&M and Urban Outfitters (they have other shops too, but they’re really expensive :P).

There is also a Courtyard Marriott and Costco at the Waterfront. We have been staying there instead of the Holiday Inn as there is a choice of restaurants and entertainment :)

I don’t know about Hot Topic…

but there is a Goodwill and Salvation Army on East Carson Street.

Its Closer than South Hills Village but not within walking distance. maybe a short bus ride.

You can also take the 67A to the Monroeville Mall, which is pretty decent… It has basically the same stores as the Waterfront, but considerably less ambiance.

Oh, man, you said the magic words. Movie theater and Dave and Busters. Who needs clothes? I’m hoping that Waterfront means it’s on the water. What water? Thanks for the Courtyard tip. We’re Marriott Rewards members, and if we take a trip to Pitt, we know where to stay now! Thanks for the thread!

There’s also the Century III Mall, which is a bus ride (or two) away–the Hot Topic is right near the front entrance.

It’s on a river. So don’t plan on diving in :D

I’d recommend (in this order)
The Waterfront
Southside Works
South Hills Village

Monroeville Mall is a bit far but its nice and it does have a hot topic. Waterfront and South Side are also nice

Is there a mall I can get to using only the bus? I don’t mind doing a little walking. It’s just that if I have to get on the bus and then take the trolley there’s a greater chance of me getting lost. I just want to try it out.

59U to the Waterfront. Catch it by the O on Forbes.

sorry, I’m still not good with bussing terminology. by “O” does that mean I can catch the 59U at the bus stop near the william pitt union? thanks.

Hmmm… I think the “O” is the hot dog place on the corner of Forbes.

Best mall is the Ross Park Mall (Hot Topic, plus Norstroms, Coach, Penneys, Macy’s, LLBean, Cheesecake factory and a ton of other stores. If you can’t find a friend with a car (sure to be many kids with cars, or who live there…it’s a 40 minute drive from Oakland), then you would need to take the bus downtown and pick up a bus out to the Ross Park mall on McKnight Rd. Everyone will know where you want to go.

Each side of Pittsburgh has its own malls. South: the Galleria; North: Ross Park; East: Monroeville Mall (smaller mall but good Barnes and Noble and fantastic but expensive seafood restaurant). I’m not mentioning Century III or the Mills since they’re struggling right now and might not be worth the bus fare. The Monroeville and the Homestead shopping complex are the closest to Oakland, but nothing is really that far once you figure out Pittsburgh. Each of them are worth a Saturday’s exploration.

Keep in mind that there IS shopping downtown Pittsburgh (something that everyone forgets LOL). There’s a huge Macy’s in the center of town, that has everything you might want. And best of all, no sales tax on clothing! (I’m not sure if it’s open on Sundays, though - downtown is pretty quiet on the weekends.)

Waterfront is a great destination for the college kids, and the Southside is the big hangout place. Aside from the outdoor mall across from the giant Lowes theatre at Homestead (stadium seating-plus the extremely comfortable reserved seats for just an extra buck or two), you can walk to a Target and other discount stores.
